Contrary to popular opinion, the majority of older Americans reside in the community and not in nursing homes. Aging can pose some challenges as to how one remains safe at home. Join Lisa Walke, M.D., attending physician, Dorothy Adler Geriatric Assessment Center at YNHH, and assistant professor of medicine at YSM, as she addresses the key points you or your loved one should know in order to remain safe while living independently. School Violence: Break the Cycle

Low Back Pain: It Really Hurts

Date: Nov. 6
Low back pain will affect approximately 80% of the population and is the second most common reason patients visit their primary care physician. It can range from a mere nuisance to a debilitating pain that prevents patients from working and enjoying leisure activities. Recent advances in both surgical and non-surgical treatments have improved outcomes allowing patients to return to their normal lives. This presentation will better educate health care providers and the public in determining candidates for surgical or non-surgical care. The presenters will be Peter Whang, MD, of Yale Orthopedics, and Christopher Coulis, Doctor of Chiropratic, MS, with Alfred Furtado, DC, of Shoreline Spine & Pain Associates, PC. Admission is free. According to the National Institute of Health, in 2002, an estimated 15 to 30 million men in the U.S. experienced chronic Erectile Dysfunction (ED). ED has many causes most of which are treatable. It is not an inevitable consequence of aging. Digital Mobile Mammography Van
In collaboration with Hill Health Center and Yale Cancer Center, a state-of-the-art Digital Mobile Mammography Van has arrived at Yale-New Haven Hospital. The Digital Mobile Mammography Van is a mobile unit that comes to your location, providing you and others with the convenience of rapid diagnosis and access to the most up-to-date technology thereby making it easier for working women to obtain their annual screening exams. YNHH’s expert mammography technologists deliver personal, friendly and confidential care to every woman.

CPAP support group
A Continuous Postive Air Pressure (CPAP) support group offering health awareness information to adults with sleep apnea is now forming. Family members are also welcome. The group will provide an interactive forum for exchanging information, education on sleep disorders and review of new and old CPAP equipment. Each meeting will be attended by board-certified sleep specialists and staff from Yale Sleep Medicine. Refreshments will be provided. RN Refresher Program
The Yale New Haven Health System RN Refresher Program brings nurses up to date with hospital technology and standards and allows them to ease into the clinical setting again as students. Nurses who complete the program and go on to work at Bridgeport, Greenwich or Yale-New Haven hospitals may be eligible to receive sign-on bonuses and reimbursement of RN Refresher tuition. "Eat Right" Weight Management Program
Periodically, Yale-New Haven offers the "Eat Right" weight management program to help you slim down. Topics covered include assessing your weight loss needs, label reading, dining out strategies, healthy cooking and behavior modification. Cancer Support Group for Women
A support group for women who have or have had cancer provides information about cancer, available resources and assists patients as they cope with a diagnosis of cancer. The group meets every other Thursday. For more information, call Phyllis Smith, MSW, (203) 688-2304.

Pain Relief for Childbirth
Anesthesiology offers free question and answer sessions concerning options for pain relief during labor. Sessions are conducted by specialists in obstetrical anesthesia. These one-hour meetings are held twice each month. For more information, call (203) 785-4488.

Diabetes education series
Free classes offered throughout the year for adult patients and their families. Call the Yale Diabetes Center at (203) 737-1932 for a schedule or to reserve a space.

Toy Closets/Toy Teas
Toy Closets were introduced to the Children's Hospital by WTNH-TV anchorwoman Ann Nyberg in 1993. The YNHH Auxiliary coordinates the program and keeps the closets stocked with toys for pediatric patients yearround. Children's pre-admission visits offered prior to surgery
Sponsored by the YNHCH Child Life program and nursing and anesthesiology departments, pre-admission visits prepare toddlers, preschoolers, school-age, and adolescent patients and their families for elective and one-day surgical procedures. Pre-admission visits are offered Monday through Friday in the afternoon. To register, call the Pediatric Surgery Center, (203) 688-7996.

Take a tour
Area community, high school and college groups are invited to tour Yale-New Haven Hospital. The tour program is a free, community outreach service that is health care career-oriented. Tours are offered by reservation only and are conducted by YNHH staff and volunteers. To arrange a tour, or for more information, call YNHH Volunteer Services at (203) 688-2297.

Infant/child CPR classes
YNHH Women's Education Life Learning (W.E.L.L.) offers a four-hour class in infant and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The fee is $50 per person. Certification is offered at $55 per person. AfterDance/stroller aerobics
AfterDance, a postpartum fitness program, is now offered with Stroller Aerobics, an innovative way to get mom in shape after baby arrives. AfterDance and Stroller Aerobics classes mix body realignment, aerobic activity and muscle toning in a "baby-friendly" environment. Classes are available in New Haven and surrounding communities. Joint replacement surgery
Patients who will undergo joint replacement surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital are encouraged to attend an informational class led by a certified orthopedic nurse and the care coordinator for the orthopedic unit. The hour-long session will cover topics such as: preparing for admission; the day of surgery; medications; pain management; physical therapy; knee/hip special instructions; length of stay; medical management; and choosing post hospital care—acute rehabilitation or home recovery. No registration is required. Patients are encouraged to mention the class when scheduling their pre-admission appointment and the office will try to coordinate their appointment time with the class.

The classes will be held the first and third Tuesday of every month at noon. They will be held in the 7-7 conference room on the seventh floor of the East Pavilion at 20 York Street.
