Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC)

The cesarean section rate in the U.S. climbed over the past 20 years, until nearly 30% of all births were performed by c-section in some hospitals. While c-sections will always be the best option for some women, more women could avoid the longer recuperation and expense of this procedure if encouraged to try a vaginal birth. Talk to your physician about the reasons for a cesarean and whether a VBAC might be possible for you.

Yale-New Haven Hospital is part of a national effort to reduce the c-section rate from 21% to 15%. Working with local obstetricians and midwives, the hospital has organized VBAC classes that educate women who have had c-sections about opting for a vaginal birth next time. Labor and delivery nurses have received additional training in techniques to help women succeed in having a successful vaginal birth after cesarean.

Other tips:

  • Come to Yale-New Haven only when you are in active labor.
  • Change positions often during delivery.
  • Take sips of clear liquids during labor.
  • If you need an IV during labor, ask for a hep-lock.
  • Try the Birthing Ball. (Our nurses can explain).
  • If you need an epidural, consider a walking epidural. See pain relief options
