Cancer survivor and author will discuss book at signing event

The Smilow Cancer Hospital Wellness Workshops series of community health education lectures continues on Tuesday, Sept. 3 with a book discussion and signing at 5:30 pm in the 55 Park Street auditorium, New Haven.

Through his book, "Cancer's Gifts with Love & Hope," author Robert V. Heffernan will share his experiences of coping with stage four cancer. He will discuss how, along with fear, cancer also provided him with a renewed perspective on how to find goodness and beauty even in the toughest of times.

New blood draw station opens in Wallingford

Yale-New Haven Hospital recently opened its 18th blood draw station offering services for adults and children at 665 North Colony Road, Wallingford. The station is open Monday - Friday, 7 am - 5:30 pm (closed daily 12:30 - 1 pm) and Saturdays, 8 am - noon. No appointment is necessary; most major insurance plans are accepted. For information call 203.265.5409. The hospital has additional blood draw stations in Branford, Clinton, East Haven, Guilford, Hamden, Madison, New Haven, North Haven, Norwalk and West Haven.

CareCard Lecture Series addresses the mind, body and spirit

Yale-New Haven Hospital's CareCard Program will host two free workshops in September promoting health for the mind, body and spirit. The workshops are held from 5:30 - 6:30 pm. Registration is required.

  • Wednesday, Sept, 11 — You Are What You Eat…Healthy Eating and Aging will focus on how the food choices you make when you're over 50 impact how you look and feel. Presented by Mary Maloy, registered dietitian. Regsiter online.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 17 — What is Wellness Yoga? A gentle, participatory practice focusing on centering, breathing, simple movement and relaxation. Presented by certified Prana Yoga instructor and Urban Zen Integrative Therapist Nancy Ashcroft.

Auxiliary 61st Annual Meeting and Toy Closet Celebration on Sept. 17

The Yale-New Haven Hospital Auxiliary will host its 61st annual meeting and celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Toy Closet Program on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Anthony's Ocean View, 450 Lighthouse Road, New Haven. Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes on Sept. 21

On Saturday, Sept. 21, Yale-New Haven Hospital will once again support the local American Diabetes Association's signature awareness walk. The Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes helps raise money that will change the future of diabetes and the 25.8 million American children and adults living with the disease.

Greater CT Walk From Obesity is Saturday, Sept. 21, in Bristol

The Greater CT Walk From Obesity, part of a national event to bring together those affected by obesity, will take place Saturday, Sept. 21 at Rockwell Park, Park Street, Bristol, CT. Registration and check in is at 9 am and the walk begins at 10 am.

Dedicated to drawing attention to the prevention and treatment of obesity, the walk is a fun way to get some exercise and raise money for a good cause. Online registration is $25 and will be available until Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at 1 pm. On-site registration is $35 the day of the event. Auxiliary hosts talk on holistic approach to health and healing Sept. 25

The Yale-New Haven Hospital Auxiliary will present a free community education lecture on health and healing from the perspective of integrative medicine on Wednesday, Sept. 25. It will be held at 7 pm at the Cultural Arts Center at the Whitney Center, 200 Leeder Hill Road, Hamden.

Ather Ali, ND, MPH, specialist, Integrative Medicine, Yale Stress Center, will discuss how to combine mainstream and complementary treatments that include current research. He will also address common misconceptions about complementary and alternative medicine.

YNHH fielding team for Alzheimer's Association's walk Sept. 29

Yale-New Haven Hospital is again a sponsor of the local Alzheimer's Association's Walk to End Alzheimer's. The walk will be held Sunday, Sept. 29 at New Haven's Lighthouse Point Park. Registration begins at 9 am for the 10 am walk.
