YNHH only CT hospital ranked nationally by U.S. News & World Report

Seven Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital specialties also spotlighted

Yale-New Haven Hospital continues to rank among the top U.S. hospitals, according to U.S. News & World Report's annual "America's Best Hospitals." In addition, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital has been ranked among the best in the nation for seven of its pediatric specialties in the 2014-15 Best Children's Hospitals rankings.

Of the nearly 5,000 hospitals surveyed, YNHH ranks nationally in 11 of 16 specialties and is the only Connecticut hospital to be included in the rankings. Diabetes and endocrinology rank in the nation's top 10 at #7, while psychiatry is at #11, gastroenterology and GI surgery at #17, geriatrics at #18 and gynecology at #18. YNHH is ranked among the best nationally in seven other medical specialties: cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; ear, nose and throat; nephrology; pulmonology; and urology.

For YNHCH pediatric specialties, the Children's Hospital ranked in cancer at #45; diabetes and endocrinology at #3; gastroenterology and GI surgery at #18; neonatology at #37; neurology and neurosurgery at #35; orthopedics at #48; and pulmonology at #47.

According to U.S. News & World Report, hard numbers support the rankings in most specialties — death rates, patient safety, procedure volume and other objective data.

72 YNHHS physicians make New York magazine's 'Best Doctors'

New York magazine has named 72 Yale New Haven Health physicians among the best in the New York metropolitan area in its 2014 "Best Doctors" issue. Physicians listed on New York's 17th annual "Best Doctors" list were selected through a peer-nomination process. New York compiles its "Best Doctors" list using Castle Connolly's book, "Top Doctors: New York Metro Area," adjusting for factors including geographic balance to better reflect the magazine's readership. YNHH recognized for environmental excellence

Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization for healthcare institutions that have made a commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly practices, recently honored Yale-New Haven Hospital with two awards for environmental excellence. YNHH took the Circle of Excellence Award, Practice Greenhealth's highest honor for hospitals, recognizing facilities leading the industry with innovation in sustainability through superior programs.

YNHH is also among the first-ever winners of Top 25 Environmental Excellence Awards, the organization's most prestigious environmental achievement award. It recognizes healthcare facilities that exemplify the best of the best in environmental excellence by setting the highest standards for environmental practices in health care.

The sustainability initiatives for which YNHH was recognized include: operating room recycling, LEED ratings for green buildings, a sustainable pharmaceutical waste program, various operating room reprocessing initiatives, the reduction of BPA/DEHP (chemicals found in many plastic items) and safer chemicals throughout the hospital.

YNHCH ECMO program receives international award

Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital recently received the "ELSO Award for Excellence in Life Support" from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) for its pediatric ECMO program.

ECMO, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, is used for life-threatening heart and/or lung problems. The procedure adds oxygen to the infant's blood and removes carbon dioxide, allowing the sick heart and/or lungs to heal. YNHCH's pediatric ECMO program, established in 1992, was the first in the state.

Noontime summer concerts continue at YNHH

Notes at Noon, the summer music concert series sponsored by Yale-New Haven Hospital Auxiliary, continues with free concerts through August. The popular series offers outdoor entertainment by local musicians on selected Fridays during the summer from noon to 1pm at the Hunter Courtyard, at York and Cedar streets.

Remaining concerts this season, weather permitting, are: 102nd Army National Guard Band, July 25; George Baker Band, Aug. 1; and ECA Jazz Ensemble Aug. 22.

YNHH honored for health and wellness initiatives

The Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce recently honored Yale-New Haven Hospital with the 2014 Workplace Wellness Award for its overall wellness initiatives for employees.

The award recognizes organizations with outstanding workplace wellness programs. Livingwell, Yale New Haven Health System’s comprehensive wellness program, has three key focus areas: human resources and benefits plans with strong preventive care components that encourage healthy living; population health programs to help employees at risk for, or currently living with chronic conditions; and financial wellness program offerings.

YNHH was also recognized as a Gold Level Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association for making the health and wellness of employees a priority. YNHH encourages healthy employee lifestyles by providing programs on nutrition, weight loss and exercise as well as offering the on-site Livingwell Fitness Center.

YNHH will host blood drive Tuesday, July 29

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive at Yale-New Haven Hospital on Tuesday, July 29, from 7 am to 6 pm in the 2nd floor auditorium at 55 Park St. The last 15 minutes of each hour will be kept open for walk-in donors.

YNHH is a major trauma and surgical center and the largest user of blood products in Connecticut. The Red Cross continues to need donations of all blood types. Call for an appointment at (203) 688-7436 or email

Come along for the Closer to Free ride

There’s still time to sign up to ride in the annual Closer to Free bike ride to benefit Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New-Haven and the Yale Cancer Center. Be part of this remarkable day of remembrance, joy and community on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014.

Whether you ride 25 miles, 62.5 miles or the Closer to Free Century (100 miles), you’ll be raising money and hope for a world closer to being cancer free. And if you’re not a cyclist, you can still get involved by supporting a participant or taking on one of the many volunteer positions as part of the Road Crew or at the Yale Bowl. Register at:
