Cancer survivor celebration to be held June 12

In celebration of National Cancer Survivors' Day, Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven will host a program for cancer survivors and their families on Wednesday, June 12 at 55 Park St., New Haven. Registration begins at 4:30 p.m. in the second floor auditorium, followed by hors d'oeuvres and the program.

Moderated by Thomas Lynch, Jr., MD, director of Yale Cancer Center and physician-in-chief of Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven, the program features a discussion of "Transitions and Transformations" with a panel of cancer survivors. A special performance of Closer to Free by The Fairfield County Children's Choir and presentations of Closer to Free interviews will follow the panel discussion. Spine lecture: Some straight facts about lower back pain on June 13

Nearly 80% of Americans will experience lower back pain at some point in their lives. What causes lower back pain? How do you know if the pain is mechanical (issues with the vertebrae or discs) or muscular (inflammation)? What's the best treatment?

Join James Yue, MD, a Yale-New Haven Hospital attending physician, associate professor of orthopaedic surgery and co-chief of spine surgery, Yale School of Medicine, on Thursday, June 13 for Low Back Pain, a discussion of back issues. The event will be held at the Hamden Professional Center, 2560 Dixwell Ave., Hamden, at 6:30 p.m. Offered through YNHH's Health & Wellness Series, the lecture is free but registration is required. Notes at Noon concerts begin Friday, June 14

Notes at Noon, the summer music concert series sponsored by the Yale-New Haven Hospital Auxiliary, will host its 27th annual summertime concert series. Beginning Friday, June 14, this year's concerts, which take place at noon in the Hunter Courtyard on the York Street Campus, feature both new and returning artists.

Concerts offer outdoor lunchtime entertainment on four Fridays in June and July. This year's line-up includes:

  • June 14: The Steve Atwood Band, classic rock and country
  • June 28: Cosmic Jibaros, Latin rock band
  • July 12: Frank Viele & Group, acoustic funk
  • July 26: 102nd Army National Guard Band

Come along for the Closer to Free ride

It's not too late to sign up to ride in the annual Closer to Free bike ride to benefit Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New-Haven and the Yale Cancer Center. Be part of this remarkable day of remembrance, joy and community on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013.

Whether you ride 25 miles, 62.5 miles or the Closer to Free Century (100 miles), you'll be raising money and hope for a world closer to being cancer free. And if you're not into riding, you can get involved by supporting a participant or taking on one of the many volunteer positions as part of the Road Crew or at the Yale Bowl. Register at:

YNHH holds blood drive on Saint Raphael Campus Monday, July 1

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive on the Saint Raphael Campus of Yale-New Haven Hospital on Monday, July 1, 7 a.m.-6 p.m., in the conference room of the cafeteria. The last 15 minutes of each hour will be kept open for walk-in donors.

Yale-New Haven Hospital is a major trauma and surgical center and the largest user of blood products in Connecticut. The Red Cross continues to need donations of all blood types, especially during the busy summer season when many donors are on vacation.
