YNHH, YNHCH recognized by U.S. News & World Report

Yale-New Haven Hospital and Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital have again been included among the top hospitals in the United States, according to U.S. News & World Report's annual rankings.

YNHH had one specialty ranked in the nation's top 10, diabetes and endocrinology at #6. Also ranking high: psychiatry at #11, gynecology at #14 and gastroenterology and GI surgery at #18. YNHH is ranked among the very best in the nation in six additional medical specialties: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, geriatrics, nephrology, ear, nose and throat and pulmonology. Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital was ranked among the best in the nation in five pediatric subspecialties: cancer (#31); diabetes and endocrinology (#4); gastroenterology (#25); pulmonology (#44); and urology (#37). Read more.

Yale-New Haven Hospital honored as 'Best Employer' by AARP

Yale-New Haven Hospital is being honored by AARP and the Society for Human Resource Management as one of the 2013 Best Employers for Workers over 50. Areas of consideration included: recruiting practices; opportunities for training, education and career development; workplace accommodations; employee health and retirement benefits, and retiree work opportunities.

Nearly 30 percent of YNHH employees are age 50+ with an average tenure of 18 years. YNHH offers several programs and benefits that support mature workers, including tuition reimbursement and training opportunities, flexible work schedules and alternative work arrangements, free health screenings and wellness programs, financial and retirement planning and dependent care benefits. YNHH holds blood drives on two campuses: July 30 and Aug. 28

The American Red Cross will hold blood drives at Yale-New Haven Hospital this summer. On Tuesday, July 30, representatives will be in the 2nd floor auditorium at 55 Park Street, 7 am - 6 pm. To make an appointment for the Park Street event, email or call 203.688.8425.

On Wednesday, Aug. 28, a blood drive will be held in the upper level of the AllSpice Cafe at the Saint Raphael Campus, 1450 Chapel Street from 7 am - 6 pm. To make an appointment at SRC, email or call 203.789.3805.

The last 15 minutes of each hour will be kept open for walk-in donors. YNHH is a major trauma and surgical center and the largest user of blood products in Connecticut.

Come along for the Closer to Free ride

There's still time to sign up to ride in the annual Closer to Free bike ride to benefit Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New-Haven and Yale Cancer Center. Be part of this remarkable day of remembrance, joy and community on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013.

Whether you ride 25 miles, 62.5 miles or the Closer to Free Century (100 miles), you'll be raising money and hope for a world closer to being cancer free. And if you're not a cyclist, you can still get involved by supporting a participant or taking on one of the many volunteer positions as part of the Road Crew or at the Yale Bowl. Register at

51 YNHH physicians named to New York magazine's 'Best Doctors'

New York magazine recently named 51 Yale-New Haven Hospital physicians among the best in the New York metropolitan area in its 16th annual "Best Doctors" issue. Castle Connolly Medical Ltd, a New York City research and information firm, determines the rankings based on a regional peer-review survey that asks thousands of licensed physicians to nominate the physicians who they believe are the best in their fields.

Yale New Haven Health System hospitals recognized for equality

The national Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation has recognized Yale New Haven Health member hospitals for their commitment to equitable, inclusive care for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) patients and their families, who may face challenges in getting adequate health care.

Bridgeport, Greenwich and Yale-New Haven hospitals are among 464 healthcare facilities nationwide named "Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality" in the Healthcare Equality Index 2013, an annual survey conducted by the HRC Foundation, the educational arm of the country's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender organization.
