An imbalance of thyroid hormones that throw off your metabolism and understanding some of the tests your cardiologist uses to diagnose heart problems are among the topics covered in Yale-New Haven Hospital's "Health & Wellness Series" of free lectures during the month of June. Komen Connecticut Race for the Cure June 7

Put your best foot forward and join or support Yale-New Haven Hospital's team in the annual Komen Connecticut Race for the Cure, Saturday, June 7, Bushnell Park in Hartford. Registration begins at 7 am. The event includes a 5K race, Kids K and short run and 2K and 4K walks.

Closer to Free/Cancer Survivors Day event June 11

Cancer survivors and their families are invited to a Closer to Free/Cancer Survivors Day event, 4:30 pm, Wednesday, June 11, at Yale University, West Campus. Thomas Lynch, Jr., MD, physician-in-chief, Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven, and director of Yale Cancer Center, is moderator for the event, which will include presentations on nutrition and lifestyle changes, along with a cooking demonstration. Free talk covers prostate health

Give Dad the gift of health education this Father's Day. Yale-New Haven Hospital's CareCard Program, geared to those 50-plus, will host a free lecture, Understanding Prostate Health, Tuesday, June 17, at 6 pm in the Cronin Auditorium at YNHH's Saint Raphael Campus, 1450 Chapel St., New Haven. Urologist Charles Walker, MD, a men's health specialist, will talk about the risk factors, symptoms and treatment of prostate problems.

Lectures address women's pelvic floor and incontinence issues

Pelvic floor disorders will be covered in two free lectures during June.

These condidtions — which may involve symptoms such as heaviness or bulging, stress incontinence from weakened muscles or overactive bladder — can impact a woman's social life and self-esteem.

Pediatric Specialty Center at Trumbull to celebrate opening on June 24

Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital will open a new pediatric specialty center at 5520 Park Ave. in Trumbull on June 24. Conveniently located off Exit 47 of the Merritt Parkway (Route 15), the new center will provide regional access to families in Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Shelton, Stratford, Trumbull and beyond.

The 11,000 square-foot facility includes 12 exam rooms, five infusion bays, an isolation room, a procedure room, a blood draw room, an exercise testing/PFT room and two echo rooms. It offers children and adolescents medical care from YNHCH pediatric subspecialists in cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, respiratory, pediatric surgery and hematology/oncology.

The Pediatric Specialty Center at Trumbull is the hospital's sixth pediatric specialty center joining centers at 1 Park St. and One Long Wharf in New Haven; 747 Belden Ave. in Norwalk; 5 Perryridge Road in Greenwich and a pediatric hematology/oncology office practice and treatment center on the seventh floor of Smilow Cancer Hospital.

Noontime concerts swing into summer at YNHH

Notes at Noon, the summer music concert series sponsored by Yale-New Haven Hospital Auxiliary, kicks off its 28th year June 27 with Jeff Fuller's Sambeleza Ensemble playing to the lunchtime crowd at the Hunter Courtyard, corner of York and Cedar streets.

The concerts offer outdoor entertainment by local musicians on selected Fridays during the summer. Each concert runs from noon to 1 pm. Other concerts for this summer, weather permitting, include: Survivor Swing Band, July 11; 102nd Army National Guard Band, July 25; George Baker Band, Aug. 1; and ECA Jazz Ensemble Aug. 22.
