Registration for Closer to Free Ride opens March 5

Online registration for the 2014 Closer to Free Ride opens on March 5! The event kicks off that night with a “registration” celebration at Bar, 254 Crown Street in New Haven beginning at 5 pm.

Join us for a remarkable day of remembrance, joy and community on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014. Whether you ride 25 miles, 62.5 miles or the Closer to Free Century (100 miles), you'll be raising money and hope for a world closer to being cancer free. And if you're not into riding, we've got plenty of great volunteer positions ready and waiting for your energy and dedication.

Tai Chi workshop scheduled for March 13

Smilow Cancer Hospital continues the Smilow Wellness Workshop series with "Live Well, Feel Well, Be Well with Tai Chi," Thursday, March 13 at 5:30 pm. The free educational class, which incorporates Tai Chi movements, focus, breathing and meditation, will be held at 55 Park St., New Haven, room 202. Cancer patients, family members, guests and staff are welcome.

YNHH named a top 10 nonprofit company for executive women

Yale-New Haven Hospital has been named to the 2014 NAFE 10 Nonprofits for Executive Women list by the National Association for Female Executives (NAFE).

Informational weight-loss sessions continue in March

Yale-New Haven Hospital's bariatric program offers free informational seminars on weight-loss surgery in March. The seminars are held monthly and are geared for those who are at least 60 to 100 lbs. overweight who are at risk for obesity-related diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and gastric reflux. March sessions are as follows:

Neck and back pain: April 1 lecture focuses on degenerative spine diseases

Two spine neurosurgeons will be joined by a pain management specialist for My Aching Neck and Back: A Guide to Degenerative Spine Conditions on Tuesday, April 1 at 6:30 pm. The free lecture, co-sponsored by Yale-New Haven Hospital Auxiliary, will be held at the Jewish Community Center of Greater New Haven, 360 Amity Road, Woodbridge, CT.

Whether it's from an injury that develops into arthritis or a narrowing of the spinal canal pressing against nerves (spinal stenosis), degenerative spine diseases can cause the kind of pain that can compromise a person's quality of life. YNHH neurosurgeons Judith Gorelick, MD, and Joel Bauman, MD, will be joined by pain management specialist Martin Hasenfeld, MD to discuss the evaluation and treatment of degenerative spine conditions of the neck and back.

Additionally, evening sessions are scheduled once a month — the next two are Monday, March 17 and Monday, April 21 from 5 to 7 pm.
