YNHH offers community options for employees
YNHH encourages numerous alternatives for employees seeking to leave the highway behind. These include a free shuttle service with commuter lot dropoffs, dry bicycle storage, special parking for carpoolers, monthly passes for CT Transit, telecommuting and special incentives for those who use alternate commuting.
YNHH wins award for TDM
Yale-New Haven Hospital was recently awarded the Innovative New Transportation Demand Management Program Award at the 5th annual New England Transportation Demand Management Conference for "implementing an innovative program that achieved the goals of transportation demand management."
YNHH's Traffic Demand Management (TDM) program encourages use of alternative travel modes that reduce the demand on parking, minimize congestion on local roadways, improve air quality and respond to rising fuel costs. Launched three years ago, the program has reduced employee car usage at the hospital by more than 460 vehicles per day by offering discounted bus and train tickets, providing a van system to commuter parking lots, and building bicycle racks and showers for cyclers. Holding the award is Nick Proto, director, Protective Services and Parking, and Jean Stimolo, executive director, Rideworks of New Haven, YNHH's partner in traffic demand management efforts.
Bike to work
This year, YNHH participatted in the Elm City Cycling Bike to Work days, held on the third Friday of every month. Bicyclists met in front of New Haven City Hall. Bru Café provided a breakfast and the event is free and open to commuting cyclists or those considering it. Employees met fellow cyclists, and learned about the best commuting routes and how to advocate to make greater New Haven more cyclist- and pedestrian-friendly.
Hospital urging employees to get out of cars
YNHH now pays a 60 percent subsidy up to $50 for the cost of monthly train and bus passes. Payroll deductions for transit fees are pre-tax. Employees who enroll in the hospital's Traffic Demand Management program will retain their seniority in the parking system for three months. They are also guaranteed a free ride home twice a year to accommodate unforeseen demands. Every six months, employees who enroll in a TDM program can receive 12 free passes to the Dwight/Orchard parking lot to give them flexibility in their scheduling.
