Resources and support

Support for Weight Bariatric Surgery PatientsA free support group for pre- and post-operative patients is offered on the first Tuesday of every month from 6-8 p.m. in the Hospital's Max Taffel room, and the third Wednesday of every month from 6-8 p.m. in Lawrence & Memorial Hospital’s Baker Auditorium in New London. The meetings are patient-run with at least one surgeon in attendance. The philosophy of the group is essentially “by the patients, for the patients,” with a mixture of pre-op patients, post-op patients, those considering surgery, and their loved ones. The monthly meetings provide an opportunity for people considering surgery to ask questions to those that have had the surgery. At Yale-New Haven, each patient is followed closely by his or her surgeon following bariatric surgery, at two weeks, two months, six months and 12 months and thereafter. At each visit, general health, diet, exercise regime, medications and/or vitamin/mineral supplements are reviewed. It is also the time a patient can speak with the surgeon about any problems that may be related to surgery.
