YNHH celebrates FY14 and kicks off FY15

Yale-New Haven Hospital introduced Fiscal Year 2015 — the 189th year of a long and distinguished history — on Oct. 1 with a gathering of more than 700 YNHH managers and physicians at the Omni Hotel in New Haven. The group was treated to a review of what CEO Marna Borgstrom described as "an absolutely incredible year for Yale-New Haven Hospital." She noted that "the kick-off is a great opportunity to get everyone together in the same room and reflect on all that we have accomplished last year and look to what will be a challenging but very bright future for this organization."

Care delivery: Safety and quality at YNHH

"In terms of patient safety and quality, we cannot fail if we follow one very simple algorithm," said Thomas Balcezak, MD, YNHH's new chief medical officer. "No harm. Healing. Listening."

The first guest speaker at the meeting was Beth Daley-Ullem, a national advocate for improving the quality of U.S. medical care. She spoke of her infant son's preventable death in 2003 as a result of a uterine rupture, and her subsequent experience with another son who had a prenatal diagnosis of a serious heart disease. She cited instance after instance in her healthcare experiences where there were errors, communication gaps, lack of transparency and unfortunate but avoidable outcomes.
