Nursing shared governance celebrates one year and numerous accomplishments

YNHH recently celebrated the first anniversary of its integrated shared governance structure, which involves 230 nurses who serve on 16 councils and three committees — all working to promote practice excellence, safety and quality, professional development and nursing informatics.

Despite the structure's size and the complexity of the issues members deal with, the premise of nursing shared governance is simple: If you want to know how to change nursing practice to improve care, ask nurses. YNHH nurses have responded enthusiastically, said Marin Karsmarski, RN, Medicine (Verdi 5 North), co-chair of the shared governance Coordinating Council.
