Three nurses receive scholarships for advanced study
Three YNHH nurses who are working on advanced degrees in nursing will receive scholarships named after Marna P. Borgstrom, YNHH CEO, and Peter N. Herbert, MD, chief of staff.
Dr. Peter Herbert (left) and Marna Borgstrom (right) congratulated the second class of nurses who received scholarships for advanced study funded by the family of Dr. Milton Hollander. Shown also at the presentation were (l-r): Sue Fitzsimons, RN, PhD, senior vice president, Patient Services; Dr. Milton Hollander; Laura Caneira, RN; Rachel Southard, RN; and Milagros Narido, RN.
The scholarships are funded by Dr. Milton Hollander and his late wife, Betty Hollander, who was a long-time member of the hospital's board of trustees.
The Hollander family created the scholarships to honor the superior nursing care Betty Hollander received over the years at YNHH.
Nurses who are working on advanced degrees leading to licensure and certification as a clinical nurse specialist, nurse midwife, registered nurse anesthetist or nurse practitioner are eligible to apply for one of the scholarships.
"We have profound appreciation for the generous benefactors who made these scholarships possible," said Borgstrom. "Whenever she received care here, Betty Hollander shared wonderful examples of the care she received from our nursing staff. These scholarships enable us to continue to invest in a most valuable resource — the nurses at Yale-New Haven Hospital."
The three nurses who received scholarships were:
- Laura Caneira, RN, Pediatric Emergency Department, is pursuing a doctor of nursing practice degree in adult primary care at Quinnipiac University. She expects to graduate in 2015;
- Milagros Narido, Transplant Unit, is also pursuing a doctor of nursing practice degree in adult primary care at Quinnipiac University and will obtain an APRN degree upon graduation in 2015; and
- Rachel Southard, RN, Medical Intensive Care Unit, is pursuing an MSN at Quinnipiac. She expects to graduate in 2013.
