Except for the month of August, employees in the Yale New Haven Health System's Finance and Corporate Services department nominate an employee whom they feel represents the ideals and work ethics of the division.

In FY13, the Finance Customer Relations Committee (FCRC) carefully selected employees from all the nominations submitted. Four members of the Audio-Visual Team in Information Technology Services won during the month of May, which increased to 13 the number of employees honored in 2013.

Finance began its Employee of the Month recognition in 1986 and since then has honored more than 300 employees. Last month, the FCRC held its annual luncheon to celebrate the employees chosen during the fiscal year.

"More than 2,000 employees now work in Finance and Corporate Services in more than 60 locations," James Staten, YNHHS executive vice president of Finance and Corporate Services, told the group. "As we grow as a system, we increasingly rely on our colleagues to help us perform our jobs well. Our Employee of the Month program is a unique form of recognition that allows us to pause and honor the work that our employees do to support their colleagues and the patients we serve."

"I work with people who come in every day and do the best job that they possibly can," says Joyce Mockalis, RN, senior revenue management analyst, Revenue Management. "We don't look for recognition, so being named an Employee of the Month is a surprise and an honor. This recognition starts at the top of the organization so it is really meaningful for employees."

This was the first year that employees on the Saint Raphael Campus were able to participate in the recognition program. The first employee from that campus to be honored as an Employee of the Month was Marc Casey, a systems analyst and a member of the winning Audio Visual Team in Information Technology Services.

"What I like about the award is that our families are invited to attend the presentation," said Casey. "This family dimension adds to the workplace because we meet each other's families and that adds a level of involvement for us. It also gives our families an appreciation of the work we do here every day." At the luncheon, Staten concluded by telling the 2013 class of employees that "as an Employee of the Month, you carry the banner of excellence. It is an honor to recognize your contributions and it is a privilege to work with each of you."
