SRC unit clerks don new uniforms; their smiles stay the same
Wearing their new uniforms, unit clerks gathered for a photo on the first day. Shown (l-r) on the General Cardiac Unit are: Allison Clark, RN; unit clerks Angela Wilkerson, General Cardiac Unit, Phyllis White, wearing a uniform jacket, and Theresa Morant, General Medicine Unit; Jennifer Menillo, RN, PSM, Medical Oncology Unit and a member of the committee; and Louise Natale, unit clerk, Medical Intensive Care Unit.
For family members and visitors, the unit clerk is usually the first person they see when they enter a patient care unit. Visitors know that they can depend on them for help and information. Like their business associate colleagues on the York Street Campus who began to wear uniform shirts and blouses two years ago, the unit clerks on the Saint Raphael Campus adopted them earlier this month.
"Unit clerks set the image and tone for the unit and deserve to have a professional look," said Allison Clark, RN, patient service manager, General Cardiac Unit, and a member of the YNHH Unit Clerk Steering Committee for the Saint Raphael Campus. "Family members and visitors now recognize unit clerks by their uniform and feel confident that they can turn to them when they have a non-clinical question."
The new uniform is indigo and for women comes in a blouse with a ruffle in front and also plain front; it is also available in a men's shirt. Unit clerks are also able to purchase a cardigan sweater, vest or counter coat — all in black. Shirts and tops are embroidered with the YNHH logo and Unit Clerk on them.
Employees receive an allowance based on their employment status to offset the cost of purchasing their uniforms. The uniforms are available at the Feury Image Group Shop in West Haven.
Phyllis White, unit clerk on the Surgical Unit, reports that both staff and visitors compliment the new uniforms. "It's a nice shirt in a great color that makes us look professional," said White. "Visitors are able to tell who we are and know what our role is."
"The first line of our Service Excellence pledge is: ‘I will make a great first impression' and these uniforms help unit clerks do just that," said Clark. "It is always a positive when patients and visitors know our roles and ask for our help with confidence."
