Employee and Family Resources counselors to staff information tables in February

EFR counselors will staff information tables on Friday, Feb. 21 on the York Street Campus and Tuesday, Feb. 25 on the Saint Raphael Campus, offering information on the mind-body connection with heart disease and the role of emotional and behavioral health in prevention and rehabilitation.

Deirdre Myers, a licensed alcohol and drug counselor and certified co-occurring disorders professional, is the new on-site YSC counselor and will be outside the main cafeteria in the East Pavilion 8 – 9 am and 11:30 am – 1 pm. Tom Leutner, licensed clinical social worker, the SRC on-site counselor, will be in the SRC cafeteria entrance 8 – 9 am and 11:30 am – 1 pm. The counselors will also have information on healthy relationships and EFR services, which are free to employees.

Blood drive on Saint Raphael Campus on Monday, Feb. 24

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive on the Saint Raphael Campus on Monday, Feb. 24, 7 am – 5:45 pm, in the Allspice Café. The last 15 minutes of each hour will be kept open for walk-in donors.

2014 Closer to Free kicks off on March 5

Online registration for the 2014 Closer to Free Ride to benefit the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven opens on Wednesday, March 5. Interested riders can learn more about Closer to Free at its kick-off event on the evening of March 5 at Bar in New Haven, 254 Crown St., 5 – 8 pm. Guests will enjoy pizza and a cash bar.

The fourth annual ride will take place on Saturday, Sept. 6 and will begin and end at the Yale Bowl in New Haven. Riders can again choose to ride 25, 62.5 or 100 miles to raise money for patient care and research at Smilow Cancer Hospital. In addition to riders, the event also seeks volunteers to help throughout the day at the Yale Bowl and on the ride routes from New Haven to Hamden to Durham and Old Saybrook and back again. To register, volunteer or donate, employees may go to or join the fun at Bar on March 5.

Tai Chi workshop scheduled for March 13

Smilow Cancer Hospital continues the Smilow Wellness Workshop series with "Live Well, Feel Well, Be Well with Tai Chi," Thursday, March 13, 5:30 pm.

The free educational class, which incorporates Tai Chi movements, focus, breathing and meditation, will be held at 55 Park St., room 202. Cancer patients, family members, guests and staff are welcome.

Flexible spending account deadlines: March 15 and 31

March 15 is the deadline for employees to incur a healthcare flexible spending account (FSA) expense and apply it to a 2013 healthcare FSA balance. This extension does not apply to 2013 dependent care FSA expenses. March 31 is the filing deadline for all 2013 flexible spending account claims.

Both deadlines meet IRS regulations. Employees who have questions about 2013 FSA balances should contact the hospital's FSA claims administrator, Crosby Benefit Systems, 1-866-918-9711. FSA forms are available in the Benefits Office (CB 101) and on the Crosby website,
