Blood drive on York Street Campus April 7

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive on the York Street Campus on Monday, April 7, 7 am — 5:45 pm, at 55 Park St., second floor. The last 15 minutes of each hour will be kept open for walk-in donors. Career fair for evening staff April 11

Yale-New Haven will hold a career exploration information fair for evening employees on Friday, April 11, 8 - 11 pm, in the East Pavilion cafeteria special events area. Employees seeking information about general and clinical college programs should consider attending. Employees must present their YNHH badge to be admitted.

Representatives from a variety of schools ranging from Albertus Magnus College to Gateway Community College to Western Governors University (online) will discuss opportunities and options with YNHH employees.

Employees will also be able to pick up information from community, local and online colleges, universities and training programs that relates to careers in the healthcare industry.

Free lung cancer screening April 12

Smilow Cancer Hospital and the Yale Cancer Center Lung Screening and Nodule Program will offer free lung cancer screenings on Saturday, April 12, 7:30 am - noon, at the Smilow Multi-Specialty Clinic, 4th floor. The screening includes counseling and a low-dose CT scan. The screening is for people ages 55 to 80 who are: current smokers or former smokers who have quit within the past 15 years; or people with at least a 30-pack-a-year history of smoking, for example, one pack a day for 30 years, two packs a day for 15 years, three packs a day for 10 years. Social Security workshop April 15 and 16

Employees are invited to a workshop, Understanding Social Security, noon - 1 pm, on Tuesday, April 15, in room CH 201, York Street Campus, and noon - 1 pm, Wednesday, April 16, in the Selina Lewis multipurpose room, Saint Raphael Campus. A presenter from MetLife Securities will explain the basics of Social Security as one source of retirement income, including age requirements for eligibility, how it can pay to delay collecting benefits, how Social Security benefits are taxed and the impact of additional earned income on benefits. National Healthcare Decisions Day April 16

YNHH will observe National Healthcare Decisions Day on Wednesday, April 16 with informational events for employees, patients and visitors. YNHH is calling this effort "Start the Conversation."

On the York Street Campus, Start the Conversation tables will be staffed in the Atrium, 7:30 am - 7 pm and at the New Haven Unit cafeteria, 8 am - 2 pm; and on the Saint Raphael Campus in the Allspice CafĂ©, 7:30 am - 7 pm. Representatives from Patient Relations, Legal Affairs and Risk Management, and Spiritual Care will be available to discuss the benefits of making wishes known in advance and advance directives — which include both living wills and healthcare representatives. Handouts will include conversation starter kits, YNHH's advance directives brochures and copies of the advance directives legal forms. The day will kick off a larger hospital effort designed to improve awareness and training related to advance directives within the hospital and to promote greater awareness in the community.


Better sleep talk April 17

The YNHH Auxiliary is sponsoring a free talk, Better Sleep for Better Health, 6:30 pm, on Thursday, April 17 at 55 Park St. Henry Klar Yaggi, MD, Sleep Medicine, will discuss sleep disorders and treatments for improving sleep quality. The talk is part of the Auxiliary's free Health Education Lecture Series. To register, employees should call 688-2000 or visit www.ynhh.org/events.


Employees invited to donate in honor of Doctors' Day, Nurses Week

The Office of Development invites employees to donate to YNHH in honor of a physician or nurse who has made a difference in their lives — as a caregiver or colleague.

National Doctors' Day was March 30, but donations are still welcome. National Nurses Week is May 6 through 12. To make a donation, employees can visit the new Development section of the hospital website, www.givetoynhh.org, or call 688-9644. The new Development section includes a list of giving opportunities, calendar of fundraising events and information on community organizations that have raised money for YNHH or donated items for patients.
