Newsmakers Thomas Balcezak Thomas Balcezak, MD, has been named senior vice president, Patient Safety and Quality, and associate chief of staff. In addition to his responsibilities as chief patient safety and quality officer and service line leader for Neurosciences, Dr. Balcezak will provide administrative oversight for safe patient flow and throughput, the Hospitalist service and the Grimes Center. He will co-lead the system-wide clinical redesign efforts stemming from his role as co-chair of the Clinical Redesign Committee, as well as co-lead the YNHH Epic Implementation Coordination Team. Abe Lopman Abe Lopman will assume the position of senior vice president, Operations, and executive director, Smilow Cancer Hospital. In addition to his current role as service line leader for Oncology, Lopman will take on responsibility for Behavioral Health, as well as develop a comprehensive musculoskeletal service line based on the Chapel Street Campus and serve as clinical service coordinator for Orthopedics. Lopman will also continue to lead all aspects of the transition and full implementation of the "100-day plans" necessary to ensure a smooth integration of the Saint Raphael and Yale-New Haven campuses. Cynthia N. Sparer Cynthia N. Sparer will take on the position of senior vice president, Operations, and executive director, Women and Children Services. In addition to her existing responsibilities as the service line leader for the Children's Hospital and clinical service coordinator for Ob/Gyn, Sparer will assume oversight responsibility for the Ambulatory Services Division, Perioperative Services and clinical support services. In addition to these operational responsibilities, Sparer will lead hospital-wide efforts to develop an ambulatory strategic plan and business operating practices, as well as provide leadership for the Patient Experience enhancement efforts. Christopher M. O'Connor Christopher M. O'Connor, former president and CEO of the Hospital of Saint Raphael (HSR), has joined YNHHS as executive vice president and COO. He will focus on the continued development of shared system services and programs which provide value for the entire health system, including Northeast Medical Group, Supply Chain and Corporate Procurement, Facilities and Human Resources. O'Connor will also oversee the expanded development of shared clinical services and initiatives in areas like Occupational Health and Pharmacy services. Alan Kliger, MD Alan Kliger, MD, former vice president and chief medical officer of HSR, is the new chief quality officer for YNHHS and will direct system-wide performance management and coordinate safety and quality initiatives across the delivery networks and Northeast Medical Group. Dr. Kliger, a former member of Yale School of Medicine's full-time faculty, led a successful quality, safety and enhanced patient experience initiative at HSR where he served on the executive team for 11 years. Before joining HSR, he was in the private practice of nephrology. Joseph Bisson Joseph Bisson, former vice president, Strategy and Business Development at HSR, has joined the Yale New Haven Health System as vice president, Business Development, reporting to Gayle Capozzalo, executive vice president, Strategy and System Development. In his new role, Bisson will be responsible for integrating system-wide business development strategies and support services for the delivery networks. Prior to HSR, Bisson worked at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford where he was the operating executive for behavioral health services.
