CHOOSING A CANCER CENTER
New Cancer Center to open 2009
  Choosing a cancer center and a selecting a cancer specialist are important decisions. Questions to ask your cancer specialist will guide you in learning more about options for cancer treatment.

Read about the new $467 million, 14-story, comprehensive clinical cancer center that will consolidate all of our clinical cancer care services.

DIAGNOSING CANCER

  Thousands of lives have been saved by detecting cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage. Find information about how cancer is diagnosed using mammography, prostate specific antigen testing or colorectal cancer screening tests. Learn about the YNHH Mammography Van and check the schedule to see when it will be in your area.

Genetic counseling and testing offers new insights into cancer on the molecular level. Getting a second opinion is sometimes helpful.

TREATING CANCER AT YNHH

  Cancer treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy used alone or in combination to provide the maximum benefit to patients. Staging the disease is the first step in determining an individualized treatment plan. Treatments include hormone therapy, gamma knife, and bone marrow and stem cell transplants. Learn about breast conservation surgery and reconstruction. Research programs and clinical trials offered through the Yale Cancer Center bring promising treatments to patients before they reach the marketplace.

COMMON CONCERNS FOR CANCER PATIENTS

  Many side effects from cancer or its treatment, such as pain, nausea, fatigue and depression, can be prevented, reduced or eliminated through medical interventions. Don't suffer needlessly. Patients should notify their doctors or care providers so symptoms can be relieved.

CANCER SUPPORT GROUPS

  A variety of cancer support groups are available in the New Haven area to provide patients, family and friends much-needed support and information during this difficult time. Groups are available to provide general cancer support or specific resources for parents of children with cancer, women with cancer, patients with brain tumors, prostate cancer, and those suffering a loss due to cancer.

Cancer Answers

  Yale Cancer Center "Answers" is a weekly radio show focused on cancer screening, detection, treatment and prevention. It airs 6 p.m. Sundays on WNPR, but you can also listen to episodes online or subscribe to the podcast. (Subscribe through iTunes.)
