Cancer treatment
Cancer is usually treated with surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy or biological therapy. Your cancer specialist may use one method or a combination of treatments. The choice depends on the type and location of the cancer, whether the disease has spread, your age and overall health and other factors.
At Yale-New Haven Hospital, support services are offered to both inpatients and outpatients and their families. The cancer team never forgets what an impact—emotionally, physically and spiritually—a diagnosis of cancer has on the patient and the family. Our nurses and social workers offer one-on-one counseling with patients, providing opportunities for patient education and better coordination of care.
You have an important part in your recovery. Many patients feel a loss of control when a diagnosis of cancer is made. The cancer team respects and encourages your role in your own care. You need time to make decisions, and you need good information to make informed choices. Each member of the Yale-New Haven cancer team is dedicated to answering your questions, addressing your concerns and maximizing your involvement in your care.
You may want to ask your doctor about participating in a research study, which is also called a clinical trial. Trials through Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Yale Cancer Center help bring new therapies to cancer patients around the world.
