Yale-New Haven Adult Congenital Heart Program
A unique program within Yale-New Haven Heart and Vascular Center is the Yale-New Haven Adult Congenital Heart Program, which unites the resources of three premier institutions – Yale-New Haven Hospital, Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital and Yale School of Medicine – to provide seamless, comprehensive care for adults with congenital heart disease.
It is estimated that in the next decade there will be, for the first time, more people over the age of 18 living with congenital heart disease than people under 18. The new adult congenital heart population exists because of advances in the diagnostic modalities, medical management and pioneering reparative surgical and catheterization techniques – many of which were developed at Yale-New Haven – to improve survival for children with this most common of all the birth defects.
Yale-New Haven’s Adult Congenital Heart Program specializes in advanced treatment methods, including the use of catheter-based devices to correct problems without surgery. Yale’s program is the only one in Connecticut and one of a few in the region.
Pediatric cardiologists consult with adult cardiology, adult pulmonology, high-risk obstetrics, cardiac imaging, transplant and cardiothoracic surgery. Experts in congenital electrophysiology offer potential curative therapies for life-threatening arrhythmias. Social work services, along with expert, advanced nursing personnel, help create the multidisciplinary approach to the finest patient care.
