Cardiovascular Medicine Program

general cardiology

Cardiovascular Medicine at Yale-New Haven Heart and Vascular Center provides comprehensive cardiovascular care covering all aspects of cardiology, including cardiovascular imaging, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology and heart failure/transplant. Both Yale School of Medicine and Yale-New Haven Hospital are committed to building a top-tier cardiology program and are investing significant resources to develop new clinical and translational research programs to benefit patients with all aspects of cardiac and vascular illnesses.

Yale-New Haven is the intellectual home of nuclear cardiology, a field established and developed by Dr. Barry Zaret, a long-time leader of Yale Cardiology. In conjunction with the Department of Radiology, a comprehensive cardiovascular imaging program including nuclear cardiology, echocardiography, CT and MRI imaging, will provide unparalleled access to imaging technology and expertise.

The heart failure/transplant program provides comprehensive evaluation, management and treatment of patients with advanced heart failure that include medical therapy, device therapy and heart transplant. Both the Cardiovascular Medicine and Cardiothoracic Surgery sections are looking to introduce the newest devices and procedures for management of these patient groups, including total artificial heart and other cardiac support devices.

The interventional program at Yale-New Haven Heart and Vascular Center is focused on providing prompt access to coronary and peripheral interventions to patients with acute and chronic ischemic syndromes both at Yale-New Haven and affiliated hospital programs, including a 24/7 primary angioplasty program for patients with acute myocardial infarctions. A new emphasis of the interventional program is a comprehensive percutaneous revascularization of patients with advanced coronary and peripheral vascular disease and the investigation and development of stent valve technology designed to benefit patients with valvular heart diseases.

The electrophysiology program is providing a full spectrum of services, including implantation of heart rhythm management devices and catheter-based treatment of atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachyarrhythmias.

Yale-New Haven Heart and Vascular Center is proud of having trained many generations of residents in cardiovascular medicine, many of whom have gone on to become national leaders in the field.
