Giving to Yale-New Haven Hospital

Opportunities for support

Invest in breakthroughs
Yale-New Haven Hospital is a place where many renowned clinicians and researchers converge, a place where their synergy is maximized. As a result, pioneering advancements have made medical breakthroughs at this institution: the first X-ray ever taken in the United States, the first use of chemotherapy against cancer, the first mechanical heart anywhere, the first in vitro birth in New England (see list of medical milestones).

It is a lengthy track record of medical firsts that continue to catapult medical science forward. Yale-New Haven celebrates this convergence of clinical care and research—a convergence that stimulates medical breakthroughs.

There are many opportunities to support Yale-New Haven Hospital. Those who contribute can give to facilities, medical equipment, program funds, endowment and more.

Children's champions: Support for Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital

Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital was itself a breakthrough because, until the 1990s, children's hospitals were rare. Treating a child is different from treating an adult, and the family of a sick or injured child behaves very differently from the family of an adult patient. Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital opened in 1993, offering families the special expertise, training, experience and equipment children require.

In recognition of more than 10 years of service to the community, we are seeking the help of children's champions--individuals, corporations, volunteers, and organizations willing to support the mission and vision of the Children's Hospital as we continue to make critical advancements in the field of pediatric medicine.

Children's Psychiatric Inpatient Service (CPIS)

No one is immune to psychiatric illness. We see children from every type of home and environment, including those suffering chronic trauma and pervasive patterns of deprivation. One of the few places families can turn is the Children's Hospital, whose Children's Psychiatric Inpatient Service is considered one of the very best in the world. For example, we are the only service that has built a school into its clinical setting, which provides opportunities to retrain and practice new behaviors.

Our affiliation with the Yale Child Study Center offers an extraordinary constellation of world-renowned child psychiatrists and psychologists. The courage and success of our patients are the compelling reasons behind our major gifts initiative. This work is imperative, and it is important. We invite you to join in this effort to make a lasting difference in our patients' lives.

Cancer services

Yale-New Haven Hospital has always been a pioneer in cancer care—one of the first to launch the field of chemotherapy in 1942 and generating breakthroughs ever since. Thanks in large measure to the advancements made at Yale-New Haven, cancer is no longer synonymous with “terminal.” Its prognosis is now more likely accompanied by the words “chronic” or even “cure.”

New surgical procedures, treatments and innovations in early detection and screening have enabled patients to be treated sooner, more effectively and to live longer. Credentials like these help to explain why this hospital continues to treat the highest volume of cancer patients in Connecticut .

Women's Heart Advantage

Yale-New Haven Hospital is the leader in the region when it comes to heart care with a heart center that is leading the way to improved cardiac treatment and care. One example: our Women's Heart Advantage program helps women realize the likelihood of their own susceptibility to heart disease, to recognize symptoms and to respond by seeking care immediately. “Time is muscle” means that heart patients must be treated swiftly to avoid permanent damage to the heart muscle. YNHH continues to take a leadership role through the programs advanced by the Yale New Haven Health Heart Institute.

Advancing nursing practice

Hospital financing for professional development, recruitment and retention of staff is in short supply. In this era of a nationwide nursing shortage, hospitals must consider these needs and find the philanthropic support to provide nursing advancement. Yale-New Haven seeks funds to recognize and promote excellence in nursing practice, education and research and to enhance the image of nursing.

Activities to support these goals include:

  • Distribution of awards for outstanding practice
  • Sponsorship of seminars and educational programs
  • Creation of scholarship funds to support education programs
  • Funding for special projects
  • Implementation of recruitment and retention efforts

Those interested in supporting nursing practice at Yale-New Haven Hospital should call (203) 688-9644 or E-mail giving@ynhh.org.
