How it works
The adage "there's no place like home," is a happy reality for a growing number of Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) employees who've become first-time homeowners with help from the YNHH H.O.M.E. (Home Ownership Made Easier) program.

"It's a dream come true!" said Elaine Williams, an environmental services associate, Environmental Services, who, along with her husband, Philip, an imaging services clerk, Diagnostic Radiology, recently purchased a four-bedroom colonial in the Beaver Hills neighborhood of New Haven. Here they proudly stand with two of their children: Jessica (left) and Tiffany.

The hospital developed the H.O.M.E. program to provide hospital employees with the resources and support to buy their first home. This innovative service offers up to $10,000 in forgivable loans to help full-time employees purchase a home in the City of New Haven.

The YNHH employee ownership assistance program helps employees like Lenore Hammers and Nickiesha Fletcher with the resources and support of buying their first home. "I had been thinking about buying a home but didn't know how I could afford it," said Hammers, a social worker at the Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, who recently purchased a condominium in the Westville section of New Haven. "I'm really grateful to Yale-New Haven for helping to make this purchase possible."

With this program, YNHH helps employees overcome the financial and institutional obstacles that prevent millions of Americans from ever owning their own home. The H.O.M.E. program also offers classes, counseling and technical assistance through NewAlliance Bank to help employees navigate the homebuying process, as well as property maintenance and rehabilitation resources to help them transform their new house into a home.

Yale-New Haven Hospital is building for the future by investing in its employees and in New Haven.

Special benefits for buying in the hospital's neighborhood
For Nickiesha Fletcher, a patient account representative at YNHH, the H.O.M.E. program provided her and her 2 ½ year-old-daughter “a head start” on the purchase of their new condominium in New Haven’s West River neighborhood.

YNHH offers homebuyers like Fletcher a $200 a month mortgage subsidy for the first two years of their home ownership if they purchase a home in the Hill, Dwight, West River or City Point neighborhoods. She also qualified for a Livable City grant toward the purchase of her property.
