American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)

American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is a not-for-profit organization comprising 24 medical specialty Member Boards that oversees the certification of physician specialists in the United States.

The primary function of ABMS is to assist its Member Boards in developing and implementing educational and professional standards to evaluate and certify physician specialists. ABMS is an organization of medical specialty boards with shared goals and standards related to the certification of medical specialists. Certification includes initial specialty and subspecialty certification and maintenance of certification throughout the physician's career. The mission of the ABMS is to maintain and improve the quality of medical care by assisting the Member Boards in their efforts to develop and utilize professional and educational standards for the certification of physician specialists.
