Genetic consultation
Genetic consultation is available at Yale-New Haven for people who are
concerned about whether their baby may have a genetic abnormality. Birth
defects are rare, but odds increase if you or your partner has a genetic
disease, or if there has been exposure to radiation, chemicals or infections
that pose risk to the fetus.
Tests can be performed to see whether parents carry hidden genes for
diseases. Tests are now available for many types of genetic diseases,
including Huntington disease, cystic fibrosis, sickle-cell anemia, Tay
Sachs disease and others. Genetic testing looks for only a few abnormalities
and does not guarantee a healthy baby. Additional prenatal testing may
be recommended as the pregnancy progresses.
Genetic test results can be used by couples to guide their choices.
For information about prenatal diagnosis, call (203) 785-2661.
