Maternal illness or surgerySometimes, illness or surgery can interrupt breastfeeding. With a little help, though, breastfeeding can continue and may be best for both you and your baby. Talk to your health care provider about continuing to breastfeed; abrupt weaning is not recommended. Your health care provider may advise you to temporarily stop nursing your baby. If you have to temporarily stop breastfeeding, ask your lactation consultant about using a breast pump. If you need to take a medication for your illness, talk to your health care provider, pediatrician, pharmacist and/or lactation consultant to see if you can breastfeed while taking the medication. If you need to be hospitalized, call the hospital to find out if it has a policy concerning breastfeeding mothers and babies. Talk to a lactation consultant or patient liaison from that hospital. Ask them direct questions: Can my baby room in with me if there is another adult there to care for the baby? Can my baby be brought into the hospital for feedings in my room? Will the hospital provide me with an electric breast pump to use during my stay? The answer is generally yes to all of these questions if you will be hospitalized at Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH). Call the following numbers with questions about being hospitalized at YNHH: For questions about breast pumps, call WELL/A Mother's Place, (203) 688-9355. For questions about breastfeeding while hospitalized, call a YNHH lactation consultant, (203) 688-3283. Continue: How do I pump?
