Research has shown that breastfeeding is the superior form of nutrition for brain growth and protection against infections, allergies and many illnesses. Breastfeeding may also protect women from some cancers and helps your body heal after childbirth. It is easy, less costly than formula feeding and is a natural source of warmth and comfort for your baby. Please Note: This information is directed at helping women breastfeed a healthy term baby (at least 38 weeks of gestation). If you have a baby with special needs, you may benefit from individualized counseling from your health care provider and lactation consultant. To locate a lactation consultant in your area, please see Breastfeeding Resources. For information about the Breastfeeding Couples class at Yale-New Haven Hospital, call (203) 688-9355 or email.
