More than a century after a Yale physicist made the first X-ray image in the U.S., YNHH's extensive, highly trained team of diagnostic radiologists uses sophisticated techniques to create images of the entire body and its organs. Those images are often critical in diagnosing and treating a multitude of patient injuries, diseases and disorders.
Radiologic technologists are licensed medical professionals who perform diagnostic imaging examinations. They are educated in anatomy, patient-positioning techniques, equipment protocols, radiation safety and basic patient care. Technologists often specialize in a particular diagnostic imaging area, such as CT, MR, breast imaging, nuclear medicine, PET or ultrasound imaging. They are all board certified to perform these examinations under the direction of the radiologist. Imaging services are performed for adult and pediatric patients admitted to various units of the hospital and on an outpatient basis at multiple locations throughout the New Haven area, including several locations of Yale-New Haven Hospital's Temple Radiology services.

Today, the Diagnostic Radiology Department at Yale-New Haven Hospital is a leading provider of traditional and cutting-edge diagnostic radiology services for adult and pediatric patients, including X-rays, CT scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound and vascular imaging, nuclear medicine, PET/CT, breast imaging, and bone density scans.
Led by a team of board-certified radiologists, physician specialists and other imaging professionals, the department also participates in the training of several hundred physicians every year, as well as related research projects and clinical trials, through Yale School of Medicine.

Diagnostic Radiology Services We Provide
General diagnostic radiology includes digital X-rays of the chest, abdomen and extremities. It also includes fluoroscopy (an X-ray "movie") procedures, such as upper and lower GI (gastrointestinal) series and barium enemas.
Computed tomography (CT) scan uses a combination of X-rays and advanced computer technology to produce more-detailed, cross-sectional views -- horizontal, vertical and 3-D views -- of the body, including bones, muscles, fat, organs and blood vessels. Our diagnostic radiologists work in tandem to assure that all CT scans are of the highest diagnostic quality, and use newly developed algorithms that reduce X-ray exposure. Precise imaging protocols are designed and monitored by our radiologists to minimize radiation exposure.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging test that produces high-quality and detailed images of the body without the use of radiation. The images are created by using a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to process the information. YNHH recently installed eight state-of-the-art Siemens MRI scanners, featuring the latest technology to deliver the most accurate diagnosis. We are fortunate to be one of the first in the Northeast to offer dedicated breast imaging and image-guided biopsies at the breast center at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven.
Ultrasound or Sonogram uses ultrasonic (high-frequency) sound waves to produce computer-displayed images of organs, tissues and blood vessels. It is typically a painless procedure that uses no radiation.
Nuclear medicine and PET/CT uses very small amounts of radioactive materials, commonly called tracers, injected into specific areas of the body in order to examine the function and structure of organs, including the heart, kidneys, thyroid and brain. This specialized type of imaging is often used to help diagnose and treat many different medical conditions and diseases.
Breast Imaging (mammogram) is an X-ray of the breast, used to detect and diagnose breast diseases. There are two different types of mammograms. The most common is a screening mammogram, used to detect small growths in the breast, even before they can be felt. A diagnostic mammogram is used to diagnose breast abnormalities, such as a lump, pain, nipple thickening or a change in breast size or shape, which may be detected in a screening mammogram. Besides X-ray mammograms, the Breast Imaging Service at YNHH also provides patients with breast ultrasound, breast MRI and breast biopsies. In addition, the Breast Center now performs 3-D mammography, also known as digital breast tomosynthesis. This new technology allows the radiologist to view the breast in thin "slices" rather than as a whole and should improve detection of lesions and will also reduce false alarms due to overlapping normal tissues. Currently, our technologists use the new 3-D technology along with standard imaging. This combination provides the radiologist an opportunity to compare the familiar standard images with prior mammograms. The 3-D imaging is performed simultaneously with the mammogram so the length of the exam does not change. While tomosynthesis involves a small increase in the radiation dose, the total radiation dose remains below the federal standards for mammography.
Bone density scans, produced with X-rays or CT technology, measure bone content, mass and strength. This testing procedure is primarily used to diagnose osteoporosis, a disease in which there is loss of bone mass and destruction of bone tissue, and thus a greater risk of fracture, particularly among the elderly.
Pediatric radiology includes a full range of imaging services for infants, children and young adults. We offer two locations: the in-patient imaging facility at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and a specialized outpatient pediatric imaging facility adjacent to the Pediatric Specialty Clinics at 1 Long Wharf, off I-95 in New Haven. Our radiology team — available 24/7 — is specially trained in caring for children. We offer a full array of diagnostic tests in a pleasant, age-appropriate environment. Our technologies include a dedicated plain radiography, fluoroscopy and ultrasound equipment optimized for pediatric patient imaging. Pediatric CT and MRI services are provided on state-of- the-art scanners. Dedicated pediatric nurses supervise sedation when required, and our Child Life specialists are available to ensure children are at ease throughout testing and treatment.

All exams require a physician's order before an appointment can be scheduled. The order can be faxed by the physician's office or the patient. The scheduler also will need to know the patient's:
