General diagnostic radiology includes digital X-rays of the chest, abdomen and extremities. It also includes fluoroscopic (an X-ray "movie") procedures, such as upper and lower GI (gastrointestinal) series and barium enemas. X-rays and fluoroscopy have been the mainstay of diagnostic radiology for years, and are often the first radiological exams performed on a patient.
Computed tomography (CT or CAT scan) uses a combination of X-rays and computer technology to produce more-detailed, cross-sectional views of the body, from head to toe. CT data can also be manipulated to demonstrate anatomy in any imaging plane and to provide 3-D views when needed, for example, in evaluating vascular disease or complex fractures. Precise imaging protocols are designed and monitored by our radiologists to minimize radiation exposure.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive imaging test that produces high-quality and detailed images of the body without the use of radiation. The images are created by using a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to process the information. As with CT, MRI can provide views of the body in any imaging plane, as well as 3-D images.
Ultrasound, which uses high-frequency sound waves to create images, is well-suited for evaluating abdominal and pelvic organs. It also is an essential part of breast imaging, as well as the best means of looking at small, superficial organs such as the thyroid gland and scrotum. With the addition of Doppler technology, ultrasound is outstanding for noninvasive evaluation of many vascular structures such as the abdominal aorta and carotid arteries.
Digital mammography, which is used exclusively at Temple Radiology, takes less time, has a higher accuracy in cancer detection and uses less radiation than conventional film-screen mammography. This technology is employed for both routine screening mammograms and diagnostic mammograms to more thoroughly evaluate abnormal findings that have been discovered through screening mammography or physical examination of the breasts. Our radiologists report diagnostic mammography results to patients immediately following their procedure and are available at all times for consultation.
Bone density scans, produced with X-rays or CT technology, measure bone content, mass and strength. This testing procedure is primarily used to diagnose osteoporosis, a disease in which there is loss of bone mass and bone tissue, and thus a greater risk of fracture, particularly among the elderly. Women are four times more likely than men to develop osteoporosis.
Interventional radiology procedures performed at Temple Radiology include biopsies and arthrography. When a breast biopsy is recommended, our radiologists have great expertise in performing mammography-guided (stereotactic) and ultrasound-guided biopsies. We also routinely perform liver and thyroid biopsies in our New Haven and Guilford offices. Arthrography involves an injection into a joint space (shoulder, hip, knee, etc), either for therapeutic purposes (steroid injection) or more commonly prior to MRI examination in order to better diagnose certain joint abnormalities.
