YNHH updates its career information and application pages

Each year, Yale-New Haven Hospital receives more than 100,000 applications for the hundreds of jobs it posts. The positions are open for external as well as internal candidates.

Two years ago, the Recruitment and Staffing Department started to work on modernizing its career pages so applicants would have a more positive experience and find the application process easier to use.

"Keeping the hospital staffed with the right employees affects morale, retention and patient care," says Nancy Collins, director, Recruitment and Staffing. "How an applicant views Yale-New Haven generally begins with their first experience and today, that experience usually begins online. We wanted that experience to be a smooth and inviting one for applicants."

Recruitment and Staffing worked with the Marketing Department to re-think and re-vamp their site. They concluded that applicants would enjoy viewing testimonials from YNHH employees so nine were chosen to share their stories with visitors to the career pages of

In addition, they created pages that would give external applicants and YNHH employees more information about the wide variety of positions available at the hospital. All photos and videos on the pages are of hospital employees and, in many instances, information pages feature Service Excellence heroes who share their perspective about what it means to be a Yale-New Haven Hospital employee.

"Yale-New Haven Hospital is an employer of choice and our pages now reflect our reputation for excellence," said Renee Hoyt, HR representative. "Visitors to our pages see the diversity of our workforce and can also learn about our benefits and culture, even before completing an application." Hoyt notes that when an applicant applies, he or she immediately receives a thank you email for their interest in YNHH. The site also offers a tool that allows applicants to track the progress of their application by using their name and a password.

"Our pages are a powerful welcome mat to the thousands who apply to work here each year," said Collins. "Even if they are not hired right away, we want applicants to have a good experience with Yale-New Haven. There is always the possibility an applicant will apply again at a future date, and that time — it may be a match."
