YNHH livingwell Fitness Center celebrates its first year

The Yale-New Haven livingwell Fitness Center celebrated its first anniversary in December. Over a year in the making, the sleekly designed, 13,000-square-foot fitness center offers a variety of exercise machines, a weight work-out area, cycling room, and locker amenities, including the overnight and day lockers.

Throughout the day, fitness center staff members gave classes so interested employees could sample the classes members can take — many of them at no additional cost — including classes in stretching, Zumba and abdominals. In addition, YNHH dietitians answered employees' nutrition-related questions.

Employees on the Saint Raphael Campus have already joined. Gayle Barricelli, a manager in the Pathology Department, and Lenora Barraco, unit clerk, Rehabilitation, are already frequent users of the fitness center.

"I joined right after the Yale-New Haven/Saint Raphael integration," said Barricelli, who views the center as a benefit. "The center is clean and spacious and the staff are so helpful — whether you have a question about a machine or a class. I find the staff and other members are non-judgmental — it's a great atmosphere."

Barraco, whose husband, Lenny, works on the York Street campus, is also a member of the fitness center.

"I was inspired by my husband who lost 30 pounds in the first year," says Barraco. "I love the atmosphere and appreciate the staff who are so helpful and friendly. I take cycling classes and am even considering riding in Closer to Free."

Memberships to the YNHH livingwell fitness center cost $12 per pay period and applications and class schedules are available at the center or on the YNHH Intranet. Fitness center hours are Monday-Friday, 5 a.m.- 9 p.m., and Saturday, 5 a.m.-5 p.m. The fitness center is conveniently located beneath the Air Rights Garage on Cedar Street.
