Recruitment and Staffing helps employees learn internal application process

Each year, Yale-New Haven Hospital posts an average of more than 1,500 jobs and the first job seekers who get to view the openings are employees of the hospital and of Yale New Haven Health System. Employees of YNHH, however, are given first priority for consideration.

"This is an organization that wants its workforce to succeed and prosper," said Nancy Collins, director, Recruitment and Staffing. "We hire good people so when other opportunities open up, we want them to be the first who learn about and apply for open positions."

Looking for a new job can be challenging at any organization or on any online site. Yale-New Haven Hospital now has more than 12,000 employees since its integration with the former Hospital of Saint Raphael, and Recruitment and Staffing wants to make sure all employees know how to navigate its internal job posting system.

"If employees are familiar with our application system, we know they will be more inclined to apply for positions that open up," said Collins. "These presentations will increase the number of qualified internal applicants for the jobs we are offering."

Starting on June 17, representatives from Recruiting will hold 45-minute presentations (see box) where employees will learn how:

  • positions are posted
  • to search for jobs on the intranet
  • to complete an online application
  • to interview successfully
  • the selection process works

A question-and-answer period will follow the presentations which will be held on both campuses and on different shifts.

For those employees who want help with creating a résumé — which must accompany applications — the hospital offers career development tools — including help with writing and updating résumés, and frequent career information sessions. Cynthia Lowman, career counselor, Human Resources, is available at 688-1085 to answer questions and make appointments.

"Yale-New Haven works thoughtfully to hire and train the employees who make this a nationally known destination hospital," points out Collins. "We are developing the resources our employees need to successfully apply for jobs that boost their careers within the hospital and the Yale New Haven Health System."
