In late July, Yale-New Haven Hospital sponsored a blood drive at 55 Park Street that drew more than 100 potential donors. They gave 79 productive pints of blood, which exceeded the drive's goal of 75 pints. The hospital will sponsor its third Red Cross summer blood drive on Wednesday, August 28, 7 a.m.-5:45 p.m., on the Saint Raphael Campus in the Allspice Café.
"Hospital employees are well aware of how critical blood is to the recovery of our patients from surgery or illness and how restorative it is for patients undergoing chemotherapy," said Thomas Balcezak, MD, associate chief of staff. "We are grateful to managers who encourage their employees to take that hour and give a pint of blood — there is truly no substitute for human blood at this time.
"The need continues to be urgent in Connecticut," notes Dr. Balcezak, who points out that "Yale-New Haven is the largest user of blood products in the state. I encourage employees on the SRC to give on August 28."
Almost daily, Precious Hunter, a coordinator in Transplant Services and recent donor, witnesses how important a safe and secure supply of blood is to the patients who seek care at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
"I am reminded every day how our patients rely on blood and am happy to give," said Hunter at the recent blood drive in 55 Park Street. "Giving blood gives me the opportunity to ‘give back' — to our patients or to anyone in Connecticut who needs blood to restore their health."
For employees who would like to make an appointment for the SRC blood drive on August 28, they may contact Melanie Champion, manager, Blood Bank, Saint Raphael Campus, at 789-3805. Walk-ins are welcome during the last 15 minutes of each hour.
