How do we love you? Let us count the ways!

Yale-New Haven Hospital works hard to make sure that employees feel appreciated for the work that they do — especially when additional demands are placed on them.

This past year was a challenging one for employees of the newly combined Yale-New Haven Hospital but they rose to the occasion. To celebrate, YNHH orchestrated lively Top Ten Reasons to Celebrate Employees barbeques on September 10 and 12, during the day and off-shift, on both campuses.

Employees streamed into the cafeterias in record numbers to find out the reasons (see page 4) the hospital was celebrating their efforts and to enjoy the hot dogs, hamburgers, ribs and salads that senior managers ladled onto their plates. And that was before employees got to the dessert tables where they could choose from fresh fruit, brownies and giant chocolate chip cookies!

Just missing a summer rainstorm, employees on the York Street Campus were served in the small plaza outside the cafeteria. Shown at the afternoon Top Ten barbecue are (l-r): Environmental Services managers Terrance Mallory and Larry Vanterpool, and Sonia Nobrega, manager of clinical registration, PFAS.

"We had incredible turnouts for all the barbeques and were able to personally thank hundreds and hundreds of employees," said Richard D'Aquila, president and COO. "Our number-one reason for thanking employees was their efforts that made — and are making — our integration a success. It was complicated but with everyone's help, integration went off without a hitch."

Andrea Voets, RN, Perioperative Services on the Saint Raphael Campus, enjoyed the afternoon barbecue in the Allspice Café.

"Yale-New Haven does so many nice things for employees to make sure we feel appreciated," said Voets, a 41-year veteran. "I also like that Rick D'Aquila and other managers are always at these events to make sure we know they are grateful. I feel that the hospital wants us to be aware that they know how hard we work and celebrate what we do."

The recent barbecues celebrated employees for these Top Ten reasons:

10. Record-breaking United Way campaign 9. "Great Catches" every month 8. U.S. News & World Report again ranks YNHH and YNHCH 7. Employees "know their numbers" 6. Blizzard bragging rights 5. Super storm Sandy survival 4. So regulatory-ready we passed TJC extension survey 3. Epic go-live at SRC — smoothest yet 2. Epic go-live at YNHH — biggest in US 1. YNHH/SRC integration celebrates first anniversary!
