Nurses debut professional practice model during Nurse Week

Starting last summer, nurses at the three Yale New Haven Health System hospitals began to work on creating a professional practice model (PPM) that graphically represents the excellence of their practice and outcomes. The project started before the integration of YNHH and the Hospital of Saint Raphael, so nurses on the York Street Campus reached out to their counterparts on Chapel Street and included them in the project.

Each hospital developed a core team of 10 direct care nurses and a team facilitator.

In retreats, they reviewed evidence, language and shared values to determine the key elements they wanted to include in the professional practice model.

The groups came together to create rough sketches of their PPMs and then worked with a professional designer to finalize their vision.

YNHH dedicates its sixth Habitat for Humanity home on Vernon Street

Yale-New Haven Hospital and Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven dedicated a new home at 36 Vernon Street on April 29. This was the sixth house that the hospital has sponsored in the Hill neighborhood since 2008, with support from the YNHH medical staff and hundreds of YNHH employees who volunteered to work on the houses. At the dedication, YNHH President Richard D'Aquila congratulated the family on their new home. The hospital expects to announce its sponsorship of another Habitat home this fall.

Chef Cary Neff stirs up interest in fresh food on Saint Raphael Campus

Chef Cary Neff, Oprah Winfrey's former personal chef, nationally known cooking instructor and television/radio personality, recently paid a visit to the Saint Raphael Campus where he stirred up interest in fresh, nutritious food, prepared simply. Chef Neff prepared a hot pear salad with fresh greens, and salmon with asparagus, mushrooms and herbs which he then shared with employees and guests who had lined up to watch his energetic preparation. His appearance supports the efforts of the Allspice Café which promotes wellness and healthy eating in the SRC cafeteria. Deborah Callan wins Laboratory Medicine's ROSE Award

Deborah Callan, section coordinator for Clinical Microbiology, was recently named the newest recipient of Laboratory Medicine's annual ROSE Award. The award — an acronym for Recognition of Outstanding Service and Esprit de corps — is open to the more than 435 employees of Laboratory Medicine and is presented each year during National Medical Laboratory Week. Callan, a 33-year veteran of YNHH, is a graduate of Quinnipiac University where she earned a BS degree in medical technology.

As of Saturday, June 1 when the Saint Raphael Campus goes live on Epic on the Saint Raphael Campus, YNHH will use a single online employee directory and paging system — Smart Web and Smart Speech — on both campuses. In preparation for that, Information Technology Services (ITS) is asking all employees to review their personal information in SmartWeb and update it. Between Wednesday, May 15 and Friday, May 31, employees must update their worklocation and phone, fax and pager numbers in Employee Self Service. It is particularly important for SRC employees to update their personal information because Smart Web will replace their current directory — XTEND — on June 1. Go to the Employee Self Service page on the YNHH Intranet and in the upper left-hand corner, click on Home/My Info/About Me. The change will be ready the following day. Auxiliary hosts talk on mobility and fall prevention

The Yale-New Haven Hospital Auxiliary will present a free community health education lecture entitled "Safe Steps," a discussion on safe mobility and the steps one can take to reduce the chances of falling. Mary Tinetti, MD, geriatrician, Adler Geriatric Assessment Center, will share information about how to reduce the risk of falling during daily activities. On April 11, more than 125 Yale New Haven Health System employees gathered in the lobby of the Legislative Office Building in Hartford for Hospital Day. The Connecticut Hospital Association organized the event to give hospitals the ability to voice their concerns directly to legislators as they consider $550 million in cuts to hospital funding over a two-year period. Hospital physicians, nurses, administrators and other staff traveled to Hartford where they met with legislators to express their concerns about the impact of the Governor's proposed cuts. WorkSMART works smarter for Yale-New Haven

WorkSMART provides a vital link between the hospital and the good ideas that employees contribute on ways for YNHH to save money and cut waste. Once a year, the WorkSMART Committee recognizes those employees whose ideas have been implemented. In the past four years, WorkSMART ideas have saved YNHH more than $4 million. The WorkSMART Committee reminds all employees that more ideas are needed to generate more savings and more winners at next year's dinner. Patients may now choose a care partner for additional support

As part of YNHH's new visitation policy — which was recently implemented on both campuses — patients who are admitted to YNHH may designate a care partner to provide physical, psychological, emotional and/or spiritual support to the patient and serve as an active member of the patient's healthcare team. Patients may choose more than one care partner but only one may stay beyond visiting hours. Unit nurses give the care partners a special identification badge to be worn at all times in the hospital. Team YNHH to walk in New Haven Heart Walk June 1

Yale-New Haven's 11th annual Take Your Child to Work (TYCTW) Day will be held Tuesday, April 23 on both campuses. Registration forms for each location are available through Friday, April 19 on the YNHH and SRC Intranet sites. Lab Medicine invites employees to tour its labs April 22, 25, 26

To celebrate National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, the department of Laboratory Medicine is inviting employees to take tours of its laboratories at 55 Park Street. Employees will meet some of the professionals who perform the tests behind their lab results and see the state-of-art equipment that now performs more than 8 million tests a year. The 30-minute tours will be held on Monday, April 22 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Thursday, April 25 at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and noon; and Friday, April 26, 10 a.m. Tours will cover Specimen Processing, the Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology and Virology labs, and the Blood Bank. YNHH celebrates environmental excellence on Earth Day, April 22

Yale-New Haven Hospital will celebrate its commitment to environmental excellence in health care on Monday, April 22, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., with education tables in the 2nd floor Atrium landing on York Street and in the Allspice Café on the Saint Raphael Campus. Visitors will learn about the hospital's successful efforts to reduce waste, introduce safer cleaning chemicals, offer healthier food, conserve energy and water, and encourage transportation that reduces the use of fossil fuels. Volunteer Services celebrates its volunteers during national week

Throughout National Volunteer Week, April 21-27, Yale-New Haven Hospital is celebrating its more than 2,000 volunteers on both campuses, Shoreline Medical Center and otherhospital sites. New emergency phone number at Yale-New Haven Hospital

As of Monday, April 1, the emergency phone number on both YNHH campuses becomes 155. Employees do not need to dial 9 before the 155 because it is an internal number. The York Street Campus began using 155 as its emergency phone number in 2011. In addition, both campuses will use the same emergency codes for overhead paging:

Code Blue: Adult medical emergency/resuscitate patient

YNHH livingwell credit and debt seminar April 23, 24

Holmes, former executive vice president and COO at Franciscan St. James Health in Chicago, has been named senior vice president, Operations, and chief integration officer for the Saint Raphael Campus. Holmes joins YNHH with more than 25 years of experience in senior leadership positions in multi-hospital, Catholic healthcare systems. At Franciscan St. James Health, he managed the daily operations of an integrated, two-hospital delivery system. Prior leadership appointments include COO positions with Ascension Health and Trinity Health. Holmes will serve as the senior administrative officer at the Saint Raphael Campus, and work closely with the Saint Raphael Campus site leadership team and managers who have cross-campus responsibilities. He will provide implementation oversight for the multi-year plan to integrate the campuses. Holmes holds a BS in public health administration from Indiana University an an MS in administration from the University of Notre Dame.

Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven and Yale Cancer Center will hold free head and neck cancer screenings on Thursday, April 11 and Friday, April 19. YNHH advises employees of "phishing" attacks

YNHHS Office of Information Security is advising employees to watch for phishing attacks where scammers attempt to acquire personal information through online entities at work or at home. Employees should never send patient information, passwords, bank account numbers, or any other private information in an email. They should be wary of poor spelling and grammar, as well as unexpected email attachments or links, even from known correspondents — attackers are skilled at spreading malicious software through files. Employees should be cautious if they receive an email that contains a message that a user's security has been compromised or that an account will be closed if the user doesn't respond to an email message. YNHHS's ITS department never requests passwords or account information through email or web. Employees who think they have been a victim of a phishing attack on the YNHHS network should contact the Service Desk immediately at 688-4357.

YNHH named among the best in U.S. for commuters

YNHH received a silver award in the employer category for the steps it has taken to offer transportation options — such as vanpools, bike/walk to work, commuter lots, shuttle buses and discounted train and bus passes for employees. This award is particularly significant for YNHH because it is a 24/7 operation and its percentage of eligible employees for traffic demand management is higher than for most other businesses. The award was for FY12 and did not include data from the Saint Raphael Campus. At the end of 2012, YNHH had enrolled an additional 171 employees in its Traffic Demand Management Program — a 22 percent increase over 2011. The smell of paint and the sound of saws and drills remind employees, visitors and patients that Yale-New Haven continues to invest in the physical plant of the Saint Raphael Campus since acquiring the former Hospital of Saint Raphael on September 12, 2012. In the first six months, an additional 24 beds were re-opened with the renovation of the Sister Louise Anthony Unit on the third floor. Another 28 beds will be re-opened when renovations to Verdi 4 North are completed this summer. This unit is expected to serve as a prototype for other patient care units that will be renovated in the future.

The hospital's Women's Heart Program (WHP) celebrated American Heart Month on Valentine's Day. At informational health fairs on both campuses, nurses conducted blood pressure screenings and dietitians discussed simple ways to improve one's diet for employees and visitors. WHP volunteers also discussed fitness, heart health, smoking cessation, and the importance of breast and cervical cancer screening. 2012 flexible spending accounts deadlines: March 15 and 31

Friday, March 15 is the deadline for employees to incur a healthcare flexible spending account (FSA) expense and apply it to a 2012 healthcare FSA balance. This extension does not apply to 2012 dependent care FSA expenses. Sunday, March 31 is the filing deadline for all 2012 flexible spending account claims. Both deadlines meet IRS regulations. To prepare for construction, Exit 3 on Route 34 to close shortly

The city of New Haven will close Exit 3 off the Route 34 Connector this month to prepare to turn the connector into a broad boulevard. Preparation work includes installing signs and a protective barrier that will shield areas outside of construction from debris. Exit 3 will close permanently and Exit 2 will close in June. Employees should prepare add time to their commutes while the two-year construction proceeds. By the fall of 2015, most of the major work should be complete and new, improved traffic patterns will begin.

This work begins Phase 1 of the Downtown Crossing project which will reconnect the Hill neighborhood with downtown and encourage business, retail and housing development. The first development of Downtown Crossing will be the construction of 100 College Street located on the parcel of land east of College Street near the Air Rights Garage. During Patient Safety Awareness Week, YNHH is asking employees to share their opinions on patient safety by taking the Patient Safety Culture Survey. From Monday, March 11 through Friday, March 22, employees should access the survey online from the YNHH or YNHH intranets or on any home computer or computer kiosk at www.patientsafetygroup. org/survey/ynhhs.

The survey is anonymous and takes about 10 minutes to complete. Survey results will help YNHH make care safer.

Hamden, Guilford talks on putting a stop to pre-diabetes

Almost 80 million people have "pre-diabetes" — and many do not even know it. At two talks, hospital diabetes specialists will discuss how weight, physical inactivity and other health habits can be contributing factors and how people can get begin to cut down the risks of these factors.

The first talk is on Wednesday, March 20, 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Hamden Professional Center, 2560 Dixwell Avenue. Its presenters are Donna Greenberg, APRN, certified diabetes educator (CDE), Diabetes Services, and Ellen Liskov, registered dietitian, CDE, Nutrition Clinic.

The Nursing Research and Evidence-based Practice committees from the three YNHHS hospitals are sponsoring the fifth annual Nursing Research Program called "Building a culture of clinical inquiry in academic and community hospitals." The program, free to all YNHHS nurses, will be held on Thursday, March 28, 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Harkness Auditorium.

Anna Gawlinski, RN, DNSc, adjunct professor, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and UCLA School of Nursing, will give the keynote address. Cheryl Tatano Beck, RN, DNSc, distinguished professor and program coordinator, University of Connecticut School of Nursing, and Margaret Grey, RN, DrPH, dean and Annie Goodrich professor, Yale School of Nursing, will also speak. Spiritual Care announces Lenten schedule

Spiritual Care has announced its schedule for Lenten services, leading up to Easter Sunday on March 31, on both campuses.

York Street Campus: Catholic Masses will be celebrated each Wednesday during Lent at noon in the Chapel on the first floor, South Pavilion. On Good Friday, March 29, an ecumenical service will be held in the Chapel at noon. On Palm Sunday, March 24, and Easter Sunday, a Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. and a Protestant service will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel.

Saint Raphael Campus: Catholic Masses will be held at 7:30 a.m. and noon Monday-Friday, and at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Sunday Mass is at 7:30 a.m. in the Chapel on the main floor. Palms will be given out at the 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday, March 23, and again at the 7:30 a.m. Mass on Palm Sunday. On Easter Sunday, a Mass will be celebrated at 7:30 a.m. in the Chapel.

George Manzo, named director, Financial Planning and Budget

George Manzo, senior manager, Financial Planning and Budget, has been promoted to director of Financial Planning and Budget for Yale New Haven Health System. In his new position, Manzo will be responsible for both the operating budget and the capital budget process across the health system. The operating budget involves day-to-day salary and non-salary expenses and the capital budget includes major medical equipment and construction investments. Manzo began his career with Yale-New Haven Hospital in 1999 as senior financial analyst in Financial Planning and Budget. The department was integrated into Yale New Haven Health System in 2004 and Manzo was promoted to coordinator. Manzo earned his undergraduate degree in accounting at Southern Connecticut State University and his MBA at the University of New Haven.

Business New Haven honors Kelly Grimshaw, APRN, as Healthcare Hero

Business New Haven recently named Kelly Grimshaw, APRN, service line educator, Transplant, nurse of the year in its annual Health Care Heroes report. She was one of 14 heroes honored by the magazine for devoting their careers and lives to improving human life.

Grimshaw joined YNHH on the Surgical Trauma Floor in 1989 and then moved to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. In 1999, she volunteered for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), the medical humanitarian organization that provides care to people in the turmoil of armed conflicts, epidemics and natural disasters.

In 10 years, Grimshaw worked in nine African and Asian countries. Today she serves on the board of directors of Doctors Without Borders.

She earned her BSN and MSN at the University of Connecticut. In 2009, she received an award for Nursing Education Excellence during the hospital's annual Nurse Week celebration.

In July 2010, Yale New Haven Health System announced that it would implement the Epic system which would provide each of its patients with one patient number and one electronic medical record. This record allows staff to securely access each patient's information online and ultimately will support improved patient care throughout YNHHS. Since that 2010 announcement, an Epic Implementation Team was formed; the Epic clinical and administrative systems were built to support all of YNHHS, the Yale Medical Group and many private practice physicians; the Greenwich delivery network went "live" as did many physician practices; and detailed planning prepared the YNHH delivery network for the third largest "go-live" in Epic's history.

Eight years ago, Toney Marguy — a two-pack-a-day smoker — got so much help from the hospital’s smoking cessation program that he was able to quit the habit after 39 years. When livingwellCARES debuted last year to help employees and their adult dependent children manage their diabetes, the nurse who helped him stop smoking called Marguy, a diabetic, and encouraged him to look into the new program.

Women's Heart Program celebrates American Heart Month

The Women's Heart Program (WHP) at YNHH will celebrate American Heart Month on Valentine's Day, Thursday, February 14. Yale-New Haven Hospital was recently named a finalist for the 2012 Foster G. McGaw Prize for Excellence in Community Service, one of the most esteemed community service honors in health care. The honor recognizes a hospital's broad-based efforts to improve the lives of the most vulnerable members of its community. As a finalist, Yale-New Haven will receive $10,000 to be used to support its community health initiatives. The Foster G. McGaw Prize is sponsored by The Baxter International Foundation, the American Hospital Association and Health Research & Educational Trust. Help YNHH build a new Habitat for Humanity house

Smilow Cancer Hospital opens at Greenwich Hospital

Smilow Cancer Hospital has opened a new campus at Greenwich Hospital. The opening of Smilow's Greenwich Campus will allow Yale Cancer Center specialists to work collaboratively with leading oncologists and specialists from Greenwich in the hospital's newly renovated facilities. Many of Yale Cancer Center's clinical trials will now be offered to patients receiving care at the Greenwich Hospital campus. With the opening of the Smilow campus at Greenwich, Yale Cancer Center specialists in prostate and genitourinary, head and neck, gynecologic, and brain cancers will be available for patient appointments immediately. Additional specialists will follow later this year. Smilow Cancer Hospital also has nine cancer care centers conveniently located in the region. The care centers allow Smilow clinicians to deliver high-quality care to patients in the communities where they live. Yale-New Haven will launch a six-week advertising campaign supporting Smilow at Greenwich Hospital.

In this new position, Hatfield will be responsible for regional development, clinical program growth, enhanced quality, safety and patient experience and operation efficiency. Hatfield joins YNHCH from Children's Hospital of Atlanta (CHOA), which she had joined in 2000 as a staff nurse. In 2004, she was named system director for emergency services for the hospital's three emergency departments and ultimately was named the service line administrator for emergency, transport and transfer services, which included responsibility for 5,000 critical care transports per year, 36,000 admissions and 24,000 physician referral/consult calls. To the delight of pediatric patients and their families, visitors and employees, eight college football players who were in New Haven to be honored by the Walter Camp Foundation paid a special visit to Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital. Patients and staff on the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit got a special treat when John Manziel, the quarterback for Texas A & M University and this year's Hesiman Trophy winner, stopped by for a visit. Manziel and the other players visited throughout the seventh floor, the Pediatric Specialty Center and the Pediatric Infusion Center in Smilow Cancer Hospital. Staff on the PICU were delighted to pose with the youngest player ever to win the Heisman Trophy. After almost six months of construction, two new operating rooms have opened on the third floor of the East Pavilion. The rooms are specially outfitted for minimally invasive surgery and share a control room designed with high definition digital equipment. Increasingly, patients needing urology surgery are treated in an ambulatory setting. The hospital invested in the modernized rooms to meet this growing need. Last week, the project's command center opened in an enormous space on the first floor of 55 Park Street and is now home to 200 computer terminals, 200 phone jacks, 20 printers, five 80" monitors and enough wire to wrap around the hospital many times over.

William Tarvis, III, RN, named PSM, Dual Diagnosis Unit

William Tarvis, III, RN, has been named patient service manager of the Dual Diagnosis Unit in Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital. The Dual Diagnosis Unit serves both the general psychiatric population as well as those who are dually diagnosed with mental illness and substance abuse. Tarvis, a nurse in the YNHH Adult Emergency Department since 2010, also served as a clinical nurse manager and nursing supervisor at Windham Hospital in Willimantic and at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in North Providence, RI. Prior to that, he had been a nursing instructor for the LPN program at Porter and Chester Institute in Branford. Tarvis earned his associate degree in nursing at the Community College of Rhode Island in 1998 and completed his BSN in 2010 at South University, Savannah, Georgia.

Deborah Skinner Greene, APRN, has been named off-shift nurse leader at Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital. Greene, who joined YNHH from the University of Connecticut Health Center, also worked at the Institute of Living. She was the nurse manager for the inpatient psychiatric unit at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital and was admissions director of the clinical assessment center at Elmcrest Hospital in Portland, CT. In addition, she has worked as an advanced practice psychiatric nurse in a private practice in West Hartford and at Masonicare in Wallingford. Greene received a BS from St. Joseph College and also earned a master's degree, with a major in counseling, and APRN license from Saint Joseph.

New online policy manager introduced to YNHH

Yale-New Haven Hospital receives enhanced accreditation as chest pain center

The Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care has announced that Yale-New Haven Hospital has earned another full accreditation as a Chest Pain Center. YNHH is the first hospital in Connecticut to receive the society's enhanced level Cycle IV accreditation and is accredited as a Chest Pain Center with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI). PCI, a non-surgical procedure, restores blood flow to a narrowed area within the affected coronary artery. To achieve PCI designation, a hospital must have on-site 24/7 emergent catheter laboratory capabilities and must have successfully performed 36 primary PCIs for over the 12 months prior to the site visit.

FairWarning patient privacy breach detection reviews

To protect the privacy of patients and the confidentiality of their health information, Yale-New Haven Hospital now automatically monitors and audits patient records to determine which employees and caregivers access them and when. The hospital has completed its first round of audits using the new FairWarning patient privacy breach detection tool and identified violations to hospital policy. Most violations were employees or caregivers who accessed records of patients for whom they were not involved in care, and all have resulted in appropriate sanctions per Human Resources policies. In spite of these monumental challenges, Yale-New Haven Hospital employees earned a 2.23 percent Performance Incentive Plan (PIP) payout — out of a possible maximum 3 percent. Working with intern Caitlin Costa, Dee actively solicits materials that describe the unique contributions made by hospital staff and physicians to medicine, nursing and allied fields. She works in the basement of the Clinic Building where she carefully catalogues materials that may someday serve as the basis for a display like the one she did last year that illustrated the hospital during the Civil War or the current one that highlights the histories of YNHH and the Hospital of Saint Raphael, which is now part of YNHH. Dee also answers questions from researchers about hospital firsts and historical developments. Rogerio C. Lilenbaum, MD, has been appointed chief medical officer of Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven. Dr. Lilenbaum is a practicing medical oncologist and will also care for patients through the Thoracic Oncology Program. Dr. Lilenbaum is currently chairman of the Cancer Institute at the Cleveland Clinic in Florida and will begin his tenure at Smilow on January 1. Prior to joining the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Lilenbaum was the director of cancer research and director of the Thoracic Oncology Program at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida. He also served as the principal investigator of the Mount Sinai Community Clinical Oncology Program. IRS increases maximum employees can contribute to 403(b)

For 2013, the Internal Revenue Service has increased the amount that employees can contribute to their 403(b) plan, also known as a tax-sheltered annuity. In pre-tax contributions, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $17,500 per year; employees 50 and older may contribute $23,000. Religious Ministries and Pastoral Care become Spiritual Care

On January 1, Religious Ministries on the YNHH Campus and Pastoral Care on the Saint Raphael Campus will change their names to become the Department of Spiritual Care at YNHH. The new name will be consistent with the departments that serve the spiritual needs of patients at both Bridgeport and Greenwich hospitals. The Department of Spiritual Care provides for the spiritual and religious needs of patients, their families and friends, and the hospital staff. Its multi-faith chaplains cover all inpatient units and many clinics. Chaplains respond to deaths, trauma or other critical situations where they provide compassionate listening and presence along with prayer, anointing of the sick, baptism and communion. Worship services are held regularly, including Mass on Sundays in the York Street chapel and daily on the Saint Raphael Campus, and on holy days and other days of remembrance.

Deadline for dependent tuition loan Nov. 30

The Dependent Tuition Loan Program offers eligible employees the opportunity to borrow money to cover the cost of college tuition for their dependent children. To qualify, the employee must have completed the equivalent of at least five continuous years of full-time service, or a combination of full- and part-time continuous service. The dependent child must be under 25 years of age and enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student. The interest on the loan is paid by the hospital while the student attends school. Hugh S. Taylor, MD, named chief of OB/GYN at Yale-New Haven

Hugh S. Taylor, MD, has been named chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at Yale School of Medicine and chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at YNHH.

Dr. Taylor was previously chief of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at YNHH and professor and vice chair of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at YSM.

A graduate of Yale College and the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, he completed his residency at YNHH, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in molecular biophysics and biochemistry at Yale and a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

He serves on the board of directors of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, where he is president-elect of the endometriosis interest group and on the governing council of the Society for Gynecologic Investigation (SGI). Dr. Taylor received the prestigious President's Achievement Award from SGI in 2008.

David Vinas promoted, director of Operations, Smilow

In his new position, Vinas will focus on operational initiatives, strategic planning, business plan development and recruitment, and will provide oversight for non-clinical and amenities programs.

A five-year YNHH veteran, Vinas was a member of the Smilow Cancer Hospital leadership team and assisted in the design and implementation of the disease team model.

Printing services moves to centralized site

After a competitive bid process, Yale New Haven Health System has awarded WorkflowOne — a national print management service experienced in working with healthcare organizations — a contract to provide printing services to its three hospitals and Northeast Medical Group. The new off-site service will reduce printing costs and maintain a high level of customer service and efficiency. WorkflowOne will provide print, copy and document services, including forms, business cards, envelopes and labels. John M. Boyce, MD, appointed director, Epidemiology/Infection Control

John M. Boyce, MD, has been named director of Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control. Dr. Boyce had served as hospital epidemiologist at the Hospital of Saint Raphael since August 1999, and as chief of its Infectious Diseases Section from 1999- 2011. He co-directed the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, and recently served as senior clinician for patient safety at HSR. He is a clinical professor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Boyce was trained in epidemiology in the Center for Disease Control's (CDC) Epidemic Intelligence Service, and did his infectious diseases fellowship at University of Texas at Houston. He is a past president of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America and was the lead co-author on the Hand Hygiene Guideline for Healthcare Settings, published by the CDC in 2002. He has been a member of expert panels for The Joint Commission and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.

Jensa Morris, MD, named a top hospitalist

The American College of Physicians (ACP) has named Jensa Morris, MD, a top hospitalist in the United States. Awarded to hospitalists who are making significant contributions to the medical field through their innovation, leadership and clinical skills, this honor also considers contributions in the areas of patient safety, community involvement and quality improvement. Dr. Morris has been a hospitalist at YNHH since 2002 and she is one of just 10 hospitalists from throughout the country selected for this year's award. Dr. Morris received her bachelor's degree from Princeton University and her medical degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Nearly 50 breast cancer survivors and their caregivers attended the 6th annual Women's Center for Breast Health (WCBH) "Survivors Social: An Evening of Celebration and Hope" in the McGivney Cancer Center on the Saint Raphael Campus. The Yale-New Haven Hospital Day Care Center has successfully completed a five-year reaccreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children Academy for Early Childhood Program Accreditation. The accreditation process included an on-site visit. The Day Care Center received commendations in eight of 10 areas and received scores of 100 percent in all 10 areas of program assessment. The Day Care Center, for the children of YNHH and Yale School of Medicine employees, was established in 1983. NBSCU renamed the Neonatal Intensive Care as of Oct. 1

On October 1, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital's Newborn Special Care Unit (NBSCU) officially became the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NNICU). The medical staff on this 54-bed unit provides inpatient intensive care and consultative support for critically ill and premature newborns, as well as infants with congenital abnormalities or long-term health problems. When it opened in 1960, YNHH's Newborn Special Care Unit was the world's first unit to offer this level of intensive care for newborns. While no services have been changed, the new name more accurately reflects the high level of intensive care offered on the unit. Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is the name for the unit at hospitals within the Northeast. The NNICU is located on the fourth floor of the Children's Hospital near the labor and birth unit. A six-bed satellite unit is located on West Pavilion 10.

Paul Kirshbom, MD, has been named chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and chair of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Kirshbom, board-certified in congenital cardiac and general surgery, joins YNHCH from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta where he was the assistant chief of cardiothoracic surgery. His clinical interests include neonatal and cardiac repairs, congenital heart disease and neurological protection.

Dr. Kirshbom completed his undergraduate education and obtained his medical degree at Johns Hopkins University and Medical School, respectively. He completed his general and cardiac surgery residencies at Duke University Medical Center. During his residency, he served as a research fellow in cardiothoracic surgery and then completed a research and clinical fellowship in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

The Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer invites employees and their families and friends to participate in the Tommy Fund Family Day on Sunday, October 7. Tommy Fund Day will be held at the Yale Tennis Center and includes a 5k run, a 2-mile walk, or .3-mile fun run for children 10 years of age and younger. The Tommy Fund Family Day is the fund's largest, single-day fundraising event which supports pediatric cancer patients and their families who come to Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital.

On Thursday, October 4, employees and visitors on the Saint Raphael Campus will be able to register from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in front of the cafeteria entrance.

Those who register may vote in the November 6 election for president, U.S. Congress and state representatives. The deadline for voter registration in Connecticut is October 23 by mail.

The 2012 YNHH Employee Engagement Survey runs Monday, September 24 through Monday, October 8.

Employees may complete this year's survey, themed "Harvesting Your Ideas," online; watch for the link on the YNHH intranet home page. After completing the survey, employees will also be invited to complete a Cultural Values Assessment.

Employees without computer access will have computers available in their departments so they may complete the survey. Throughout the survey period, participants will have opportunities to win daily prizes.

Employees new to YNHH from the Hospital of Saint Raphael are not asked to take this survey, but will be included in future surveys.

Again this year, The Advisory Board will conduct the survey and communicate results with confidentiality. Individual responses will not be shared with Yale-New Haven.

Yale-New Haven Hospital and Habitat for Humanity officially dedicated two new homes at 34 and 38 Vernon Street in the Hill on June 15. Dedication speakers included Michael Bennick, MD (left), YNHH associate chief of Internal Medicine and a long-time Habitat volunteer, and YNHH president and COO Richard D'Aquila. About 90 YNHH employees had volunteered to help construct the two 1400-square-foot, three-bedroom, energy-efficient homes. They worked alongside the new homeowners who were required to put in 400 hours of "sweat-equity" on their homes. This fall, YNHH will sponsor its sixth Habitat home at 36 Vernon Street, after the existing fire-gutted building there has been razed.

In this position, she is responsible for YNHH, Bridgeport Hospital and Greenwich Hospital's HIM departments. Zak joins YNHHS from Milford Hospital where she was the director of medical records and privacy officer. Previously, she was a director for Navigant Consulting and Pricewaterhouse Coopers. From 1994-2001, she was director for HIM at Hartford Hospital & Hartford Healthcare Corporation where she was recognized for her contributions to the advancement of the electronic medical record and patient security. In June, Zak was elected to the American Health Information Management Association's 2013 board of directors. Zak received her BS from Daemen College, Buffalo, NY, and her master's in health information systems from the University of Pittsburgh.

George Lister, MD, named physician-in-chief at YNHCH

George Lister, MD, has been named physician-in-chief at Yale- New Haven Children's Hospital, chief of the department of pediatrics at Yale-New Haven Hospital and chair of the department of pediatrics at the Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Lister returned to YNHH this year after joining the University of Texas Medical School in 2003 where he served as chair of pediatrics and most recently as the associate dean for education as well as the Robert L. Moore Professor of Pediatrics. He joined YNHH in 1978, and served as the professor Pediatrics and Anesthesiology. While at YNHH, he founded, and was the chief of section of critical care and applied physiology and founded the Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship Program. Dr. Lister received his medical degree from Yale School of Medicine.
