When she’s working at YNHH, respiratory therapist Devonne Canady
fights to help her patients breathe. When she’s not working, she
fights for her community by teaching young people how to box. Community and
Government Relations recently awarded Canady a $1,000 grant so she can
complete construction on her youth boxing gym, the Elephant in the Room
Boxing Club, located in New Haven’s Dixwell neighborhood. Canady, a
17-year YNHH veteran who won the heavyweight title at the first Women's
Amateur World Boxing Championships in 2001, is pictured in the gym scheduled
to open this spring. The hospital makes other investments in the community
like the one it made in Canady’s gym. Those efforts are summarized in
the latest Community Benefits Report, which can be found at www.ynhh.org/community.
