From the Nurse's Desk
Do you like to cook?
Do you like to cook? Helping your family prepare meals is a great way
to spend time together. Some children cook with their parents. Others
like to make their own snacks after school.
No matter who is cooking, remember these things:
- Wear short sleeved-shirts when using a stove to cook. Cloth can catch
on fire if it touches a burner.
- Use a sharp knife ONLY when an adult is with you and gives you permission.
- Turn pot handles away from you toward the inside of the stove.
- If you heat food in a microwave oven, be careful. The container and
the food can get very hot.
- Open popcorn and other sealed foods slowly. Steam from inside the
package can burn your skin.
Use what you know about healthy foods to help your family eat better
meals. And ALWAYS wash your hands before cooking to keep germs out of
your food.
Activity
Ask grownups in your house if they know which way the handle of a pot
should be facing when it's on the stove.
