Yale-New Haven Earns Level I Status in
Statewide Trauma System
The Connecticut Office of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) named Yale-New Haven Hospital a Level I trauma facility and one of six hospitals in the state to comprise Connecticut's statewide trauma system which went into effect October 1, 1995.
Yale-New Haven, Hartford and St. Francis Hospitals were awarded Level I status by EMS. Norwalk, Stamford and Waterbury Hospitals received designation as Level II facilities.
"We are pleased that Connecticut has chosen to implement a statewide trauma system and that EMS has designated us to handle the most serious cases," said Edwin Cadman, MD, chief of staff for Yale-New Haven Hospital. "We have been meeting all the criteria for a Level I trauma service for a number of years, and underwent rigorous scrutiny from the American College of Surgeons and received their designation as a Level I facility in 1994."
Yale-New Haven's program is led by Stephen M. Cohn, MD, chief of trauma, director of the surgical intensive care unit at Yale-New Haven and an associate professor of surgery with the Yale University School of Medicine. "We are in total agreement with the state on the importance of creating a system which will deliver seriously injured patients to centers which can provide the highest level of care. This is an important step for the people of Connecticut," Cohn said.
Important considerations in receiving the Level I designation include the range of expertise available through the medical and nursing staffs, the efficiency and quality of care in the emergency department, operating rooms and intensive care environments.
According to the State Department of Public Health, a seriously injured person will be transported to a designated trauma facility when estimated ground ambulance transport time from the accident scene to the designated trauma facility is not more than 20 minutes. Yale-New Haven Hospital's program is enhanced through its helipad, located on the roof of the Children's Hospital, that can accommodate two helicopters at once.
The emergency departments of Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Children's Hospital at Yale-New Haven combined see nearly 80,000 patients each year. Over 1,000 of those patients are trauma victims, suffering injuries as a result of automobile and motorcycle accidents, falls, work place accidents, gunshot and knife wounds, etc.
