NEW HAVEN (March 11)--The first reported cases of adult twins having heart transplants took place at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
Alfred Melillo, 64, left for home today after undergoing heart transplant surgery on Feb. 12, just more than four years after his identical twin brother, Anthony, had heart transplant surgery on Christmas Eve in 1992.
The Melillos, both residents of East Haven, had suffered from cardiomyopathy, a weakening of the heart muscle. The twins' father and their uncles each had heart conditions, leading doctors to believe that the heart problems were primarily caused by genetics.
The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), a national organ clearinghouse, said two other reported cases of twins who had heart transplants involved children, one set of 11-year-olds in 1989 and another of set of 2-year-olds in 1994. Both cases were in Houston, Texas.
Yale-New Haven Hospital has done 122 heart transplants since 1984. There are 3,731 people awaiting heart transplants in the United States, according to UNOS, which is based in Richmond, Va.
