Yale-New Haven Named School Partner of the Year

Milton Jackson, a senior at Wilbur Cross High School loves math. For the past two years, Jackson has participated in an internship with Yale-New Haven Hospital's engineering department, and the experience was so positive, he plans on majoring in the pre-engineering program at South Carolina State.

Because of the School-to-Career program and others New Haven students participate in, the New Haven Public Education Fund awarded Yale-New Haven Hospital the 1997-1998 School/Business Partnership of the Year Award on June 4. The award was presented during the fund's annual Partners in Education breakfast at 500 Blake Street. Each year the fund recognizes one of its 72 school-business partners for outstanding dedication and commitment to New Haven public school students and staff.

Superintendent of Schools Reginald Mayo said the fund is an important partner with the school system in introducing young people to career choices. "Many of the businesses have found future employees through these internships with the New Haven Public Schools," Dr. Mayo said. "Conversely, our young people have been introduced to important business people who develop into personal mentors and who open doors to fruitful and long careers."

"It is particularly poignant that at a time when our hospitals and others are under enormous pressures to cut costs and downsize, Yale-New Haven Hospital has responded by expanding its outreach and programming to support our students," said Sabrina Bruno, the fund's interim executive director.

"We consider our health promotion, career exploration and service programs with New Haven's school children and staff as essential components of our mission of community service and appreciate the opportunity to partner with the future of our community," said Joseph A. Zaccagnino, president and chief executive officer of Yale-New Haven Hospital.

The hospital supports a broad range of school partnering programs, including school-based health centers, children's health fairs, career exploration and job shadowing programs, paid internships and scholarships. Most recently, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital sponsored the newest Project Fit America (PFA) program at Hill Central School. The new outdoor cardiovascular fitness facilities opened on May 4. YNHH also sponsors PFA at New Haven's Vincent E. Mauro School.

Most recently, a middle school partnership with Sheridan Academy for Excellence was adopted for implementation in September 1998.
