Released December 20, 2000 Yale-New Haven Hospital Becomes First Hospital in Connecticut to Use Radiation Angioplasty TreatmentFor more information, call 203-688-2493 or E-mail Mark D'Antonio A revolutionary new approach using radiation is being used for the first time in Connecticut at Yale-New Haven Hospital. The FDA approved this procedure three weeks ago and now doctors are, for the first time, using radiation in conjunction with standard angioplasty treatment for patients with obstructions in the arteries in and around the heart. "Most angioplasty patients enjoy great success with the original procedure," said Dr. Stephen Pfau, an intervention cardiologist at Yale-New Haven Hospital who is currently performing the procedure. "However, in some cases, there can be a re-narrowing of the arteries. This new technique can make repeat angioplasties as well as follow-up treatments unnecessary and obsolete." The procedure, known as inter-coronary radiation, prevents the accumulation of scar tissue from building up within the wall of the affected arteries. That build-up causes the blockage. The radiation energy is focused into a very small area of the patient and the total radiation received is not considered dangerous. The entire radiation exposure portion of the treatment takes just 19 minutes. "The effect on people who have had the same artery angioplastied three or four times is very traumatic. It's very powerful to now undergo just one procedure and not have to come back for follow-up treatments or other procedures," said Dr. Pfau. For more information on this new procedure, or to set up an interview with Dr. Pfau, please call (203) 688-2493.
