Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) formally acquired assets of the Yale Psychiatric Institute (YPI) and has expanded and moved most of its psychiatric services to the former YPI facility at 184 Liberty Street in New Haven. As of June 23, all inpatient, outpatient and partial hospital services formerly provided by YPI are being provided by YNHH, renamed the Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital (YNHPH). The new service is managed by William Sledge, M.D., medical director, and Paul Haeberle, executive director.

When Yale University decided to close the Yale Psychiatric Institute, as a result of enormous financial losses over the past 10 years, YNHH decided to expand its psychiatric services by increasing the number of adult and adolescent inpatient psychiatric beds; expanding its partial hospital program at 425 George St.; and increasing outpatient services.

The hospital was authorized by the Connecticut Office of Health Care Access to operate a total of 76 psychiatric adult and adolescent beds and agreed to temporarily keep another five beds available until it demonstrates that 76 beds can meet the needs of the greater New Haven community. Seventy of those beds are at 184 Liberty Street; the remainder will be in the hospital's main building for patients with both psychiatric and medical problems. Additional staff have been hired and the transfer is complete.

"We are very pleased that despite tremendous financial pressures created by declining reimbursement, changes in payer mix, continued reductions in length of stay and an ongoing shift to outpatient services, Yale-New Haven Hospital will now be able to offer patients in the community access to full inpatient, partial hospital and outpatient psychiatric services," said Norman Roth, senior vice president at YNHH. "In addition, the Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital will operate with an open medical staff model, enhancing access for community providers. We will maintain the high level of clinical and service quality that patients and caregivers have come to expect within our community and we will preserve Yale-New Haven's leadership role in the delivery of psychiatric services."
