Yale-New Haven Hospital Responds to NYC Disaster and a Grieving Community

For more information, call 203-688-2493 or E-mail Mark D'Antonio

Soon after the reports of the damage caused by terrorists in New York City this morning, Yale-New Haven Hospital began mobilizing its resources in preparation for potential patients from New York City and other hospitals.

These preparations included ensuring the hospital would have several days of supplies in the event shipping and transportation is disrupted. In addition, a survey was made of the hospital's capacity to receive patients and the hospital has routinely reported its available beds to the state agency managing the emergency. A 14-bed intensive care unit slated for opening next week has been quickly prepared to receive patients in the event extra beds are needed. The hospital has also identified other currently unused patient care areas that can be quickly made ready to receive patients.

For the New Haven community, the hospital has launched a hotline at (203) 688-2195. This hotline will be staffed for the next few days by licensed social work professionals. In addition, the hospital's Department of Social Work will also make available teams of volunteers prepared to do crisis intervention work as requested in schools and other organizations. Requests for crisis intervention can be made to the hotline.

Doctors would remind people that in times of crisis, stress-induced heart attacks increase. If you are experiencing symptoms of a heart attack, don't ignore them. Take action and go to the nearest chest pain center or emergency department.
