Released August 20, 2001 Hockey's Stanley Cup Visits Yale-New Haven Children's HospitalFor more information, call 203-688-2493 or E-mail Mark D'Antonio In the 100-plus years as the most famous and oldest trophy in North American sports, the Stanley Cup has seen many an interesting adventure. It's been accidentally left in a snowbank as members of one championship team changed a flat tire enroute to a victory celebration. New Jersey forward Scott Niedermeyer toted the beloved bowl to the highest mountain peak in British Columbia. And just last week, Colorado Avalanche head coach Bob Hartley and a long-time friend took Lord Stanley of Preston's trophy on a fishing expedition up in Canada. This week the Stanley Cup visited Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital, courtesy of Trumbull, Conn., native Chris Drury, a member of the Colorado Avalanche, 2001 Stanley Cup champions. As a member of the cup-winning team, each player and coach is permitted to have the cup in their personal possession for several days during the off-season, to share with family, friends or in this case, to bring smiles to the pediatric patients at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital. "It's part of what being a professional athlete is all about, doing things like this," said Drury, who played high school hockey at Fairfield Prep before attending Boston University. "I'm glad to be able to share this with the kids here at Yale-New Haven. If it puts a smile on someone's face, makes their day a little brighter, that's a tremendous feeling." Ironically, the visit to Yale-New Haven took place on Chris' 25th birthday. "I do think it's kind of ironic that the visit takes place today. I was born here at Yale-New Haven so that makes it all the more special to me and my family."
