Self magazine has ranked metropolitan New Haven among the most healthful places for women in the United States due to the "top-rated" healthcare professionals at Yale-New Haven Hospital. The New Haven-Meriden area was designated number one for best health care in the magazine's annual "America's Healthiest Cities for Women" survey published in their November issue.

Self researched numerous government agencies including the American Hospital Association, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and surveyed 500 readers to identify and rank the healthiest cities for women. In recognizing the New Haven-Meriden hub as number one in the U.S. for best health care, Self concluded, "Add nearly 500 Yale University med school residents to the large staff of about 2,200 docs, and it's no wonder Yale-New Haven Hospital is top-rated."

Yale-New Haven Hospital is a major academic medical center hospital that accepts patient referrals and hospital transfers from throughout Connecticut, New England, the nation and the world. Yale-New Haven, one of the area's largest, oldest and most stable employers with nearly 6,000 employees, is well known by consumers in Connecticut through their personal experience or the experience of a family member. Last year, the hospital treated over 43,500 inpatients and over 440,000 outpatients. Nationally, Yale-New Haven Hospital is one of 50 medical centers that collectively trains nearly 40% of the physicians who enter practice in the United States each year. The 944-bed hospital also serves as a major educational resource for nursing and allied health professionals and was recognized again this year by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation's top hospitals, according to its annual "America's Best Hospitals" issue.

"Yale-New Haven Hospital and its medical staff and employees are very proud to serve the people of Connecticut and we are honored to be recognized in the Self survey," said Joseph A. Zaccagnino, president and CEO of Yale-New Haven Hospital. "We strive to provide the highest quality medical care and are committed to ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for all who come to us for care. We firmly believe that our ongoing commitment to women's and children's health and to disseminating free health educational materials throughout the communities we serve contributed to New Haven's ranking as one of the most healthful places for women in this survey."

Zaccagnino pointed to HealthLINK, the hospital's electronic newsletter on various topics, its series of fact sheets called Making the Right Choice, and the award-winning informational campaign on women and heart disease, called Women's Heart Advantage, developed in conjunction with the VHA (Voluntary Hospital Association), as major contributions to the collective health of greater New Haven's women.

Yale-New Haven Hospital is a 944-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale School of Medicine. Yale-New Haven was founded as the fourth voluntary hospital in the U.S. in 1826 and today, the hospital complex includes Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, with a combined medical staff of about 2,400 university and community physicians practicing in more than 100 specialties.
