2004 Best Hospitals -- U.S. News Online

U.S. News & World Report ranks Yale-New Haven Hospital among "America's Best Hospitals"

For the 13th consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Yale-New Haven Hospital as one of the nation's top hospitals, according to its annual "America's Best Hospitals" issue, published July 12.

Yale-New Haven Hospital was listed among the very best in the country and named in 12 of the 17 medical specialties evaluated, including cancer, cardiology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology, hormonal disorders, kidney disease, otolaryngology, pediatrics, psychiatry, respiratory disease and urology. Of those, Yale-New Haven's geriatrics and psychiatry departments ranked among the nation's top 10, while cancer, cardiology, gastroenterology, gynecology, hormonal disorders, pediatrics and respiratory disease specialties were all ranked among the top 25.

Yale-New Haven Hospital, named in 12 specialties, placed second among all New England hospitals, ranking behind Massachusetts General, which was named in 14 specialties. Yale-New Haven was also the only Connecticut hospital listed in the survey.

"We're very pleased to have Yale-New Haven Hospital again so well represented on the U.S. News & World Report listing," said Dr. Peter N. Herbert, chief of staff at Yale-New Haven Hospital. "It reflects national recognition of the expertise provided at this institution, the leadership attributed to many of our programs and our contributions to the advancement of state-of-the-art clinical care."

Yale-New Haven Hospital is a major academic medical center that accepts patient referrals and hospital transfers from throughout Connecticut, the nation and the world. Yale-New Haven, one of the area's largest, oldest and most stable employers with nearly 6,000 employees, is well known by consumers in Connecticut through personal experience or the experience of a family member. Last year, the hospital treated over 45,000 inpatients and over 447,000 outpatients. Nationally, Yale-New Haven is one of 50 medical centers that collectively trains nearly 40 percent of the physicians who enter practice in the United States each year. The 944-bed hospital also serves as a major educational resource for nursing and allied health professionals.

"Yale-New Haven Hospital and its medical staff and employees are honored to be recognized in the U.S. News & World Report survey," said Joseph A. Zaccagnino, president and CEO of Yale-New Haven Hospital. "This national recognition underscores the commitment and skills our physicians, employees and volunteers bring to our patients every day."
