Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) has been chosen by Working Mother magazine as one of the nation's "100 Best Companies" for working mothers. Yale-New Haven Hospital was the only health care organization to be selected in Connecticut, and one of only four Connecticut companies to be honored. In addition, YNHH was the only hospital in New England to be honored, and among only 12 health care organizations nationwide to be selected. Yale-New Haven was selected by Working Mother magazine because of the creative and proactive ways it helps its employees meet the challenges of balancing work and family. This marks the second time that Working Mother magazine has selected YNHH as one of the Best 100 Companies, having bestowed that honor on YNHH in 2000. "We're very proud that Working Mother magazine has again recognized Yale-New Haven Hospital as one of the nation's best places to work," said Joseph A. Zaccagnino, president and CEO of Yale-New Haven Hospital. "At Yale-New Haven Hospital, we place a very high value on recognizing and supporting the needs of working parents. Our goal remains to set the standard for improving benefits, instituting family-friendly policies and ensuring a healthy and satisfied workforce." Zaccagnino pointed to the hospital's nationally accredited onsite day care center, its employee assistance program and the dependent tuition program as meaningful programs that accommodate employees' work/life needs. In particular, Working Mother recognized YNHH based upon a list of generous benefits for which new moms are eligible, including courses on infant massage, free breast pumps, on-call lactation consultants, nutrition counseling and, for those who are having their second or third child, classes on welcoming a sibling to the family. Employees can also tap into 10 child specialists for one-on-one consultation. New moms also get 22 weeks of job-guaranteed time off, with six weeks paid at two-thirds of their regular salary. YNHH also scored high in flexibility throughout the organization. In 2003, 1,200 of 6,779 hospital employees flexed their hours. Staff in patient service areas routinely switch shifts with each other to meet family and personal needs. Finally, YNHH places a high value on not only a diverse workforce, but also a highly educated one. Employees enrolled in two-year programs for radiology, nursing and respiratory therapy can receive up to $3,500 in tuition aid and $2,500 in forgivable loans each year. Working Mother magazine based its selection on five criteria: child care, leave for new parents, flexible work arrangements, work/life benefits such as elder care and adoption assistance, and opportunities for women to advance. In addition, editors looked at a range of supportive company offerings and policies including health insurance premiums, availability of time off to care for sick children, mentoring programs and other conveniences.
