AARP names YNHH one of 50 great places to work for 50-somethings

The 35-million-member American Association of Retired Professionals - known as AARP - has this year named Yale-New Haven Hospital one of 50 2005 Best Employers for Workers over the age of 50. AARP ranked Yale-New Haven ninth nationally.

An AARP panel scrutinized businesses for retirement practices, continuing opportunities for advancement, flexible work schedules and benefits for current and retired employees. Yale-New Haven Hospital was one of only three Connecticut-based companies and the only hospital in the United States to be selected.

AARP cited programs that Yale-New Haven Hospital offers its employees including: the Performance Incentive Plan that rewards employees for meeting goals; the retirement preparation course that helps employees plan for their eventual retirement; the School-at-Work program that readies employees - some of them over the age of 50 - to return to school so they can advance their education and their careers; a nurse refresher program that helps nurses return to the profession after a break in their career and reimbursement for the course if the nurse joins a Yale New Haven Health System hospital; tuition reimbursement; and a comprehensive package of medical, dental and vision coverage.

Currently over 650 employees who have served the hospital for 25 or more years make up 10 percent of the Yale-New Haven Hospital workforce and account for over 2,500 years of combined service. One of those long-time employees is Gloria Ammons, communications associate in the adult emergency department, who joined the hospital in 1956 as a nurse's aide in urology and today is the hospital's longest serving employee.

"You can grow here, you can go back to school, they have a whole package for you - that's why I've stayed so many years. The benefits are great and I get to interact with people all day," said Ammons, who thrives on the fast-paced ED environment and the constant contact with staff, patients and their families, and ambulance staff, and would recommend Yale-New Haven Hospital to any potential employee.

Gloria Ammons is just one of the many over-50 employees who find their work at YNHH rewarding. When Ammons celebrated her 47th anniversary with the hospital in 2003, she received a special visit from her “big” boss - Joseph A. Zaccagnino, president and CEO - in her “bubble” office in the ED.

In addition to Yale-New Haven Hospital, AARP also recognized Pitney Bowes of Stamford and The Hartford Financial Services Group of Hartford.
