Dr. Carl Baum of Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital honored by EPA with Children's Environmental Health Award

Carl Baum, MD, director of the Center for Children's Environmental Toxicology at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital (YNHCH) and attending physician in pediatric emergency medicine at YNHCH, has been honored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a recipient of the first annual Children's Environmental Health Award.

The award is designed to increase awareness, stimulate activity and recognize efforts to protect children from environmental health risks at the local, regional, national and international level. This award honors individuals, organizations and businesses that have demonstrated a commitment to these goals and have initiated outreach, education or intervention activities.

"I'm very honored to be recognized by the EPA," said Dr. Baum, who recently published a guide to pediatric toxicology entitled Pediatric Toxicology: Diagnosis and Management of the Poisoned Child. "Our Center for Children's Environmental Toxicology here at YNHCH was developed with generous support from the Friends of YNHCH, and I'm grateful to them for their understanding of the need to increase awareness on toxicology matters and environmental toxins."

Dr. Baum is a 1981 graduate of Dartmouth College, and received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1990. He completed his residency in pediatrics at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in 1993, before accepting a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine and medical toxicology at Children's Hospital in Boston. Dr. Baum has been at YNHCH since 2000. Dr. Baum, his wife Diane and their children Eli and Sophie live in Woodbridge.
