Yale-New Haven Hospital news release Family Digest names Yale-New Haven Hospital a "best company" for African-AmericansFamily Digest, America's most popular family and relationship magazine, has selected Yale-New Haven Hospital as one America's "best companies" for African-Americans. Yale-New Haven is named in the magazine's fall 2005 issue. It marks the first time that Yale-New Haven Hospital has been selected by Family Digest for this honor. Yale-New Haven Hospital is the only hospital honored. "Yale-New Haven is proud to have been selected by Family Digest magazine as one of the country's best companies for African-Americans," said Marna P. Borgstrom, president and CEO of Yale-New Haven Hospital. "We are committed to providing benefits for all employees, including education and training programs to help them achieve their potential. This commitment benefits our employees, and our commitment to diversity benefits this institution." In selecting the companies for its third annual list, Family Digest evaluated employee demographics, recruitment of African-Americans, the composition of boards of directors, company culture, advancement opportunities for African-Americans, work-life programs and spending with black-owned suppliers. Family Digest honored Yale-New Haven for its many training and education programs, including its tuition reimbursement program and tuition forgiveness for employees who pursue a degree in nursing or allied health. Yale-New Haven also offers the innovative "School at Work" program that provides employees remedial study on work-time so they can confidently prepare to resume their formal education. Yale-New Haven Hospital has also developed a nurse refresher program so nurses who have left the profession can improve their skills and re-enter the clinical work force. Within the community, Yale-New Haven Hospital was a major financial contributor to Gateway Community College's launch of a nursing and allied health careers degree program - the only program of its kind in New Haven. The hospital also maintains a popular school-to-career program that gives inner-city high school students the opportunity to work in the hospital, and gain exposure to potential careers in health care. In the past few months, Yale-New Haven has received a number of national accolades in addition to the Family Digest honor. U.S. News and World Report honored 11 of the hospital's services in its "America's Best Hospitals" issue. Essence magazine cited Yale-New Haven as an outstanding employer for African-Americans and the American Association of Retired Persons recognized Yale-New Haven Hospital as the ninth-best company out of 50 for employees over the age of 50. Earlier this month, Working Mother magazine named Yale-New Haven one of the 100 best companies in the U.S. for its family-friendly policies. This is the third time since 2000 Yale-New Haven Hospital has received this honor. "For many years, Yale-New Haven has taken very seriously its responsibility to create and maintain an environment where all employees can achieve at high levels," said Pat Worthy, RN, manager, Workforce Diversity. "Commitment starts from community outreach at middle and high schools to interest New Haven residents in working at Yale-New Haven and extends to the maintenance of policies, benefits and programs that help our employees meet personal, career and family goals and needs, as well as hospital objectives." Being an employer of choice is one of the hospital's key business strategies, and Yale-New Haven is known for the stability of its workforce. Over 10 percent of the hospital's 6,000-plus employees have worked at the hospital for 25 years or longer and represent 2,500 years of combined service.
